Bill would say that carb was a bit shy for a hot 302. Didn't he run dual quads on his at one point?

I'm sure it is way undersized for a "hot" 302.
How hot is it going to be with a 3 on the tree and a single 2 1/4" exhaust?

At this point Rusty is sporting a blue carpet from a truck I parted out, a seat I bought from Ozark1 for use in Dad's truck, an engine that was in Dad's truck, the tranny and t-case from Dad's, drive shafts from Dad's truck, and someday will get the original windshield out of Dad's. He's eclectic and looks it.

As for rusty bolts, I don't have many of those.
And don't forget... Rusty will soon have the spare wheel carrier assembly from yet another donor!

True! And I'd already forgotten he has rear axles from Brownie, the 82 I parted out, a tailgate that Ray/1986F150somethinorother gave me, and probably many other things acquired from other trucks.

And, speaking of Rusty, I just took him to run errands. That was the first drive after swapping mirrors and wheels/tires. Man, what a difference! Not only can I now reliably see what's beside me, but the ride/handling is noticeably better with the lighter tires and wheels as bumps have much less effect on the steering than before. And the road noise is so much less that the truck seems 20 years newer. Before I was never sure I didn't have a wheel bearing going out as the noise of the lugs on the tires hitting the pavement was a lot like a bad bearing. Now there is no tire noise and, happily, no bearing noise either.

And how is it running since the carburetor overhaul?

It is running well, although I think the choke could be set a little leaner since it takes a while for the AFR to come up to 13 at idle and 14+ when cruising. But it does cruise at 14.5 at 35 MPH when warm and up into the low 15's on the highway. There is no hesitation or bucking at that mix, and the AFR drops to 12.5ish when the metering rods lift, which is at 5" of vacuum.

In addition to having used Rusty, I worked on him. One the way to run the errands, and w/o the obnoxious noise of the M&S tires, I noticed many rattles. The passenger's door seemed to be the worst. In this pic you can see the storage bin, which wasn't screwed down tight anywhere, didn't have all the suggested screws, and was NASTY! It isn't perfect now, but it won't rattle. Further, I found that the inside door handle wasn't tightened down and was rattling, so tightened it down.

And, I found the reason for the passenger's door lock not working. The little green keeper in this pic wasn't there so the linkage wasn't connected to the cylinder - and was rattling. Now I can lock Rusty.

And, I cleaned the later model coolant/washer tank in prep for installing it tomorrow. That'll make sure I don't knock the hose out, and I think it ensures you get all the available coolant instead of air when things get low.

I wet sanded the tailgate today. All of the body work areas now are completely invisible. Pictures soon. All I have to do now is just get a can of that "automotive" rattle can primer to touch up the areas I sanded through.

Today I started installing my firewall reinforcement plate, one would think by looking at the plate that it would bolt right on...I had to do some bending, and also some light massaging on the firewall.

This is what the damage looks like:

Here I have it mocked up, I've drilled the three holes out on the right side, having a bit of a issue with the two holes that need to be drilled into the cowl because the upper part of the bracket does'nt touch the firewall.

Man, that's a nice plate!

You're going to be amazed what it's like to have a solid clutch again.

I forgot to say, that is the terrapin plate, and although it is kinda expensive, it is very well made.

Sent from my garage using IB AutoGroup

Yup, I saw my Terrapin plate in the attic today. It is already massaged, as is the firewall, so will be a bolt-in once I get the truck back. And it is a very nice plate.

Gary, my dual quads were on a .030 289, or 292.9 ci. It was a Cobra engine in my 1966 GT350 and redlined at 7500 rpm. The carbs were 465 CFM each for 930 CFM total and it would open all 8 barrels starting in around 3500 RPM if you floored it. Shelby used the 289 HiPo heads which flow a lot better than any of the 1966 up 289-302 heads and I had Hooker 1 5/8" primary tube headers and Hooker header mufflers with the pipes exiting just ahead of the rear spring front hangers.

As for a 300 6, try 3 40DCOE webers on one installed in a Maverick, sounded like a Jag, would pull away from a 400ci Firebird at 55 mph in 4th with no problem.

Gary,

It looks like Rusty could use larger speakers!

Bill - I wondered when I typed that if it was a 289 or a 302. My bad, sorry. As for the 300, are the DCOE's are progressive? I've forgotten most of what I knew about Webers, except that DC is doppio corpo or dual-throated and O means horizontal, although I forget what the Italian is. And 40 is the diameter of the butterflies. But if not progressive were they feeding individual cylinders? That's cool!

David - I didn't even know Rusty had speakers until yesterday as the radio isn't connected. Yes, those are small. But they aren't bad speakers so I think I'll pull them and go back with stock speakers and a stock radio - if I run across one that works. The Rat Shack unit that is in it is a DIN mount and the faceplate is hacked to take it. Ugly!
