New Diesel Ford owner, need advice

I am about to purchase a 1997 Ford F250HD 4x4 diesel and need advice and do's and don'ts of diesel ownership. This truck is a one owner truck in great shape. 226,000 miles. Never owned a diesel truck before. One question I also have is it has dual tanks but the salesman does not know the capacity of each tank. Can you help?

Make sure you run a good diesel motor oil in your engine, and change it when it's due. The air filter housing on these trucks tend to leak allowing dirt into the engine. I would replace it with either the 6637 mod or and AFE intake. (no k&n). Use good fuel. Truck stops are usually good places. Check the anti-freeze with a test strip to make sure it has the proper chemicals to prevent cavitation. When changing the fuel filter, I like to drain the housing and clean it with some WD-40 and let it run out. I also use a Q-tip to clean the FPR screen from inside the housing, and then I fill the housing up with tranny fluid, leaving enough room for the filter. Stay connected to this site for future advice on how to maintain and/or repair your new ride.

Welcome to FTE!
1: Stick with this site. Even if you don't need something just pop by and read. Unreal what you will learn.

2: Avoid the stealership at all costs.(except for the parts you can only get there and the few that are actually cheaper)

There's a montrous list of advice. Someone has a good link that I bet will show up later.

Post up some pics when you get it.

Oh and if it won't start for whatever reason don't use ether

Again, Welcome!

my front tank is 16 gallons and i can stuff 15 in my rear tank if im lucky, but i have smaller tanks for some reason. most trucks are usually front 18 and rear is 19.

these trucks use oil to fire the injectors so changing the oil religiously is key for a long happy truck.

another thing is that the auto trannys aren't a hole lot better than dodge trannys, so you may be lucky and have one that got rebuilt but they dont last too long so change the fluid with something good if you can.
