I picked up a 2011 gas F250 a couple months ago and they said the first oil change didn't need to be done until 7500 miles. What are peoples thoughts on waiting that long? For those of you who have the new 250 when did you do your first oil change?
I believe the new 2011 have an oil minder, and it should tell you when to change it.
However, I am with you and would not wait that long. There are no hard and fast facts, but I like to change oil in a new engine at 2,500, then again at 5,000 (total), and then every 5,000 after that. I think it is a fools errand to try and maximize OCI. Just like it is a fools errand to use premium synthetics to increase OCI.
I just picked mine up last Saturday and I'm doing the first oil change at 1000 miles. Then it'll be 3000 miles and then every 5-7k after that, depending on how much towing has been done during the interval.
The oil minders are engineered to indicate when the service life of the oil is over. GM has been doing it for years with great success. It factors in heat, engine speed, engine load, etc. The whole 3K interval is in the past. My wife's MINI Cooper S has 15K oil change intervals.
Like it knows how to calculate fuel mileage and tell you when your tank is empty?
It works a bit differently, but overall it seems to be a good indicator of oil life. Have an analysis done on the used oil after only 3K or 5K and you will see that the oil most likely will have over half its life remaining. It is not a catch-all. One should still check the oil periodically and top it off as needed.
