Drop Top Truck

Have you ever thought to yourself 'Sure, this Ford F-150 is great, but it would be better if it was a drop top?' We're guessing that you probably haven't. But on the off chance that you have, this 2016 F-150 convertible is headed to Mecum's Indianapolis Auction May 14-19.

Strange Breed

If a drop top F-150 seems like it might be a little strange, well, that's because it is. But that didn't stop convertible conversion company Newport Specialty Cars from building it.

Gusty Move

Granted, conversion companies have been chopping the tops off of all sorts of cars for decades now. But nobody's had the guts to do it to the world's best-selling full-size pickup until now.

Fully Functional

Even Newport admits that this truck "may not be to everyone's taste." The canvas top does function properly, however, and even folds down completely behind the rear seats.

Safety First

There's also a roll bar cleverly added where the door pillars are that enhances torsional rigidity and provides some sort of safety measure in case this pickup winds up facing the wrong way up.

King's Truck

This particular F-150 convertible was originally ordered by NASCAR legend Richard Petty for a client, so it comes with a little star power, too.

Rarely Driven

Even though we imagine this thing might be quite the head turner (and hairdryer), the previous owner racked up a mere 255 miles while it was in their possession.

High End

Outside of the obvious surgery, this F-150 is pretty much stock everywhere else. And being a Platinum model, it's also nicely optioned.

Expensive Endeavor

Thus, we can only imagine what the original owner sunk into this convertible truck to make it theirs. Take a $50k-$60k truck and tack on $10K+ in conversion costs, and you're looking at an expensive endeavor.

Built for the Few

It's hard to say why anyone would want a convertible truck, a concept that's failed every time someone's tried to make one. But if you're one of the few who craves an open-air hauler, this F-150 looks like the perfect way to scratch that itch.
