Ford F-250/F-350: How to Install a Front Receiver Hitch

A front receiver hitch on your Super Duty has a few benefits. Here is how to do it yourself and save money.

This article applies to the Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty (2005-2014).

A front receiver hitch can accommodate accessories, be used for vehicle extraction with a winch or tow hook, or be used to back a trailer into position. Most receiver hitch models are bolt in applications that fit into pre-drilled holes. In some instances more modifications, such as welding and drilling, are required.

Materials Needed

  • Basic socket and combination wrenches for bolt-in
  • Half inch drill bits
  • Welder for more sophisticated work

Step 1 - Remove the front bracket

Remove the existing brackets and faring. In some cases you may have to remove the bumper.

Step 2 - Assemble the hitch

Per manufacturer's instructions, assemble the hitch. Don’t tighten any bolts yet. Some hitches can be inverted in their brackets. Determine the arrangement that best accommodates trailer and/or accessory height and ground clearance.

Step 3 - Drill holes if needed

Use the pre-drilled holes in your truck and the frame bolts to hold the hitch. If you don’t have these you will have to drill holes in your frame:

  • Attach hitch using c-clamps.
  • Mark the holes.
  • Measure and align for symmetry on each side.
  • Drill a hole and place a bolt, but don't tighten completely until all the bolts are in place.

Step 4 - Torque the bolts to specified levels

Tighten all of the bolts to the frame and on the hitch. Torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specified level. Retorque after 100 miles of use.
