Ford F-150/F-250: How to Equalize Trailer Hitch

Equalizing your trailer hitch will ensure your safety and control when towing with your Ford F-150 or Super Duty. Here is how to do it.

This article applies to the Ford F-150 (2004-2014) and F-250 Super Duty (2005-2014).

An equalizer distributes the weight more evenly in a fashion that “equalizes” the weight the trailer tongue applies to the hitch. The redistribution of weight can offer several benefits including: adhering to the hitch’s rated tongue weight, putting more weight on the front wheels for better steering and tow vehicle load management, and reducing trailer sway. A good rule of thumb is to have about ten percent of the trailer’s weight on the tongue. The California Department of Motor Vehicles offers more advice on their website.

Materials Needed

  • Sockets
  • Combination wrenches
  • ½ inch drill
  • Sharp bits
  • Center punch
  • C clamps
  • Vise grips
  • Pry bar for positioning the weight distribution bars

Step 1 - Attach the brackets to the trailer frame

• Use the C clamps and vise grips to align the brackets first.
• Measure each side to determine symmetry in alignment. Install a bolt in each hole that you drill.

Step 2 - Distribute the weight

• Set the trailer socket fully down on the tow truck’s hitch ball.
• Attach the equalizer bar to the tow vehicle.
• Attach the other end of the bar to the trailer bracket.
• Using the pry bar, apply the appropriate amount of lift for proper weight distribution.
• Make sure to use the same amount of lift for both sides.
• Adjust the weight differently for each trip as the loads may vary by the amount of force applied by the weight distribution bars.
