I am making a sticky for the numerous people with transmission problems. If you own a ranger or explorer you might be experiencing numerous shifting problems. If you would feel free to post here so we can have a running record of problems and multiple people who can assure that we have a correct fix.
I also have a tutorial available for the infamous " valve body " gasket. click the following link

Thanks

I have the 5R55E in my 02. Had shifting problems taken care of while still under warranty. There's still a hard shift from first to second, after a hard launch, usually trying to make the advanced green turning light. The next 3 or 4 stop lights will have a hard shift into second after that, somewhat like a cooling off period. Can't figure it out.
Anyway, someone posted about a shift kit that would help my symptoms. Haven't looked into it yet, but still in the back of my mind.

I bought my 04 with the 5R55E about 3 weeks ago (31K miles). During the test drive I did notice hard shifts both up and down from 1-2-3 and 3-2-1. Also noted that when shifting from D to R it took about 4 full seconds for the shift to take place.
Took it to the local Ford Dealer and they did an overhaul. Drives great now. Parts repalced were:
F77Z*7153*AA, Kit, Gasket (1)
XL2Z*7A098*CA, Screen Assy (1)
4L5Z*7D034*AA, Band Assy (1)
4L5Z*7A100*BA, Control Assembly (1)
1L5Z*7B164*BA, Plate Assy, Drive (4)
F77Z*7B442*AA, Driven Plate, Steel (4)
Diag statement on the dealer receipt says the above problems I described was caused by "burned bands and clutches".

My 05 ranger 3.0 2wd with a 5r55 was slipping when shifted into drive. It took me over 10 trips between 3 different dealerships before they did an overhaul. The thing that kills me is all the dealerships saw it slipping but it didn't throw any codes so they won't do any thing until I decided to be an ********* to them

if anyone has this problem we can supply you with all the parts needed to this repair or help you out with a exchange rebuilt valve body,
as to filing these units when there is no fill plug the oil must be pumped into the trans though that small drain/fill plug untill it jt runs out lightly when running and fully warmed up to operating temps. or we can furnish you with a deeper alloy pan that has a dipstick adapter built into the kit
we are a fte sponsor and can be contacted through
www.level10power.net
