My truck is a '78 F150 2WD LWB with a 302 engine. The exhaust appears to be the original single exhaust. I try to do all the work on my truck myself, and I generally want her to have the same appearance she did when she rolled out of the factory in April 1978. With that background, I'm wondering about the following.
How difficult would it be for me to install a set of headers on my truck? Would removing the bolts from the exhaust manifold be a nightmare?
Would I be able to keep a single exhaust setup like that currently on the truck? Specifically, with headers, will I be able to fit the cross pipe that connects one side of the exhaust to the other?
Can I install the system using pre-bent components even though I can't weld?
What other problems/issues might there be that I've not addressed here?
Back up a few steps. Is the engine stock? If so, headers aren't going to do much at all, if anything, for you with the exception of a lighter wallet and lost time.
I agree with the other guys. Headers are a waste of money unless you're running a high-performance engine and intending to go racing. With a stock engine, you'll gain virtually nothing, and the probability of exhaust leaks is quite high.
You say you want to keep your truck stock. I say, "Good for you!" Forget the headers and keep it stock!
Headers into a Y pipe would be futile
Trying to get more power and keeping a stock appearance is also futile
Dual it out with headers will give you 15-20 more ponies at most for a stock 302 but you need to start somewhere
so
Headers and dual exhaust is a start
Damn straight you might have some trouble with the exhaust manifold bolts
