I have the same problem others have had with their heater core in these old trucks. I had mine re-cored years ago and it worked fine until a little while ago when it started to leak. I pulled it out and rigged a setup where I could pressurize it while in a bucket of water. Well, I may have over pressurized it, the upper and lower tube expanded creating a bulge. So now I don't trust it, and either need to get it re-cored or replaced. I have read quite a few post on this, like some, there's no one that do the repair work locally in my area anymore. So, I can measure it and find something close, maybe have to cut new holes in the firewall or bite the bullet and pay the price and a shop when I can find one. Has anyone done a upgrade, like somehow going electric heating element, or maybe running some copper tubing inside the heater core housing, making a covering to hide the tubing?
Call Carnegie Radiator near Pittsburgh PA. They will cut you a chunk of core to the dimensions you give them. I used them to rebuild the heater core in my 55 F350 several years ago.
Then you will need to sweat off the 2 tanks and solder them onto the new chunk. If the two tubes bulged out you might have to replace them.

Thanks Abe, the two tubes I'm talking about are part of the core itself, not the hose connection tubes.
