Manual trans. for my 69

My '69 came with a 3 spd on the column when I bought it 35 yrs. ago. Shortly after that I installed a Hurst 3 spd. floor shifter. I have a parts truck with a C4 and was considering a swap but have always wanted a 4 or 5 speed. Is there any way to accomplish this using all Ford parts? If so, what parts are needed?

Kinda. Ford never made a 5 speed, but did offer 5ers made by others.

Multiple answers:
https://www.tomsbroncoparts.com/page...-transmission/

https://www.wildhorses4x4.com/catego...d_transmission

https://classicbroncos.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=86507

That last one mentions several other transmissions, including the ZF and Mazda transmissions used in Ford trucks. Those two require a juice clutch along with other mods.

People swap 4 speeds into Broncos too. T-18 and NP435 are two that were used in Ford pickups. They won't require converting to a hydraulic clutch and might even bolt onto your stock bellhousing (not sure on that).

And if you aren't so hung up on all Ford, I put an NV3550 from a Jeep Wrangler in my Bronco. A plate from Advance Adapters and a little cutting / filing let it bolt up to the stock bellhousing, and the stock clutch linkage works. I don't know how hard it would be to adapt it to the stock transfer case. I installed an Atlas at the same time as the trans swap.

Unless that parts C-4 is off a 73-77 Bronco that has the correct adapter to go from a what ever it is now to the Dana 20 xfer case. You are still in for a parts hunt and it can be $$. Manual trans has a different xfer case adapter and you have to source a auto trans to xfer case adapter.

And you can still be in some $ dept to get things to adapt for a 4 or 5 spd. https://www.wildhorses4x4.com/catego...ssion_Adapters

All 1966/72 Bronco's were 3 M/T's, A/T (C4) wasn't available until 1973.

My 71 is a 3 on the tree and a C-4. Still has the clutch pedal. And an auto stick coming out the trans hump. Is that in your parts book? lol JK
My 73 is a twin stick 3 spd "on the floor". I am sure that is NOT in the parts book. lol JK X2

ND you know you are the MAN. We all know you are the MAN. You are the parts info guru.

Does it have a LS in it too? Certainly you realize ND was talking OEM.

Of course ND was talking OEM..............lol. That is all the parts manuals cover. His answers are backed up by the parts manuals. I love his manual correctness and his lol X2

My "Tuber Bronco" not so much OEM any more... It is on a weight loss program and has a 85 Mustang 302 with a Lunati cam in it. NOT OEM either, and I know it.

Bottom line, you can put about any trans you want to in it. And pretty much the adapter is out there, if you can not "all Ford " it in there.

3.03 U have is a goodun (to 500 lb tq).
Only other ford U might like isa top loader (same thing w/a 4the gear). U don't say
if U got the 1st yr 289 ('68), the 170 or 302.
The last 2 havea bell that needs different adapters for different transmissions.

Like all automotive Qs the whole Q rides on (pun chosen) What is the APPLICATION, end goal, use, 80% drivin conditions, 80% of the RPM range. City drivin? the C4 they came w/ideal (least parasitic of the autos made). Some of that'n hwy - I like an AOD (ford, again)Oh, wait u said 'manny'. W/today's drivin conditions they seem to B all about 5 speed.

In Finger Lakes region - the masda 5 speed ford/mazda developed for the F-series trucks. A lill weak 4 off rd but still fine. If its a off rd wrk truck like mine wuz for 35 yrs the ZF (also a 5 speed, dev in Germany for ford) is nice, the 2 PTOs, low 1st, heavy duty nature. NV 4550 same, heavy, U like a 5 w/more automobile like shifting the NV 3550. I think some 1 posted the premier bronk site (made by Jeff's BGY) hava read only tech page for the 1/2 doz mannys. Chk it out !
