High Deltas with brand new oil cooler, need help!

Hey everyone,

I recently replaced my oil cooler. My delta's were max 15 deg apart. ECT = 186-190, EOT = 200-208. Oil cooler gasket was a green doorman and was falling apart. I pulled the cooler, flushed the oil, replaced coolant and such. I purchased a new oil cooler from SWAG, new "improved" OEM cooler and it did have the proper gasket, blue OEM gasket.

After I installed the new oil cooler, new oil, new cat EC1 coolant, my deltas are WORSE! I"m getting my ECT reading 186ish, my EOT once I drive...220!

I first thought it was Torque pro RT or my ELM 327. I had uninstalled and then installed my program on my phone, and my old phone. No changes in my readings.

I drove my truck to work, used our Thermo camera on it & was getting readings of about 180 where the EOT sensor sits. I thought, it's gota be a sensor. NOPE!

I have an accurate diesel back flush kit mounted on the oil cooler and back flushed the cooler. No changes to my deltas! I did a coolant flush with VC9, no change either!

I replaced my water pump last year and radiator so they are brand new.

Lower radiator hose is cool, upper is warm to hot. Touching the oil filter housing is hot.

I have no clue of how to fix, or attempt to fix this headache? Delta's are reading consistently 186 ECT, 220 EOT so about 36 deg delta, What gives???

I would look at all temp readings while cold they shouldn't vary but a few degrees. 8 to 12 hrs sitting. Could be oil temp sensor that is bad.

Yes, I replaced the engine oil temp sensor next to the oil filter housing. KOEO 12 hrs sitting, I get ECT = 55, EOT =57. Once things heat up, the ECT rises to 186, EOT slowly passes and heats up to 220.

I drove my truck to work, hit the EOT sensor area with our thermo imaging camera and it read 187 which is why I replaced the sensor. No change???

Well its an after market oil cooler so delta's aren't going to be the same to start with, as factory . Do you have any tunes on it? What temp thermostat are ya running? From the list you supplied above, you've done a lot of work. Is it possible something wasn't installed correctly? Who did the work? A lot of questions.

The hot and cold radiator hoses makes me think no flow. Pump or cloged radiator. Like i said lots of questions.

Hot and cold radiator hoses tell me the radiator is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do - eject coolant energy to atmosphere.

I can only surmise your coolant flow through the cooler is low, cooler efficiency is poor, and/or oil flow through the cooler is reduced. There’s a bypass valve in the oil filter housing that may be worth investigating. Since your flushes aren’t affecting anything, perhaps coolant flow is low due to some unintended restriction. I’m not educated enough in the nuts and bolts to offer suggestions.

Do you have the proper Motorcraft oil filter cap with a Motorcraft filter?
Your temps weren't that bad before you changed oil coolers. Either the new cooler isn't cutting it or something else done along the way is the cause.

I'm curios where this bypass in the oil cooler is located. My plan tomorrow is to open the back flush fitting to see if water will flow out of the fitting where the hose goes.

Wondering if I have some sort of air pocket in the oil cooler?

I've not yet replaced the water with coolant as I'm trying to figure out this headache!

Not sure what to do with that ... Stock filter cap and filter. I pulled the filter housing in as diesel tech ron showed on his videos. Nothing was changed in the filter housing

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think your readings would change if you put a mixture of coolant and water in the cooling system. Just my .02 cents.

Nope. I ran it with the proper Coolant, then drained it then flushed it with water. Temps were the same

And how about another kick in the *****! I"m looking into my oil filter housing and I depress the spring loaded button on top of the oil filter standpipe and my screw driver slips off of it. The Effin button shoots up and into my engine compartment. I found the button but I can not find the spring. From looking at 87crewdually's post, it is the oil filter bypass button and spring assembly. I need the spring, or the button and spring...not the entire standpipe.

I hate this truck!

Can anyone direct me to the spring that goes on to the shaft of the button that sit's on top of the oil filter standpipe?

Thank you all!
