The Time has Come

to decide what oil to use. I have finally exhausted my supply of Rotella 15/40 CJ oil and since Ford did not approve the new CK oil I wasn't sure what to use. I am thinking about using Motorcraft, the new diesel oil they released in 2017. Does Walmart carry that? I know this oil thing has been discussed to death and if anyone has recommendations I am all ears. Not sure if I want to go with Synthetic though, been running dino all it's life.

FWIW I just read the whole Triax thread and might order the 15/40. Seems Amazon no longer offers 2.5 or 5 gallon containers but I found the 5 gallon for $115 free shipping...is this the right one?

https://www.amazon.com/Triax-Synthetic-15W-40-Fleet-Supreme/dp/B0163GRIUY/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_5?crid=2SGR5ZZO0K17H&keywords=triax+15w-40&qid=1553571279&s=gateway&sprefix=triax%2Caps%2C185&sr=8-5-fkmrnull https://www.amazon.com/Triax-Synthetic-15W-40-Fleet-Supreme/dp/B0163GRIUY/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_5?crid=2SGR5ZZO0K17H&keywords=triax+15w-40&qid=1553571279&s=gateway&sprefix=triax%2Caps%2C185&sr=8-5-fkmrnull

actually they have 4 gallons for $88 which is a dollar per gallon less than the 5 gal container and much easier to deal with

Tractor Supply Travelers brand in 5 gal buckets. If you can find it on sale, it is about $8.50 a gallon. I've been using it for about 7 years exclusively without any issues.

Pretty much any modern oil will be fine.
Long ago are the days of "bad" oil. Even the store brand stuff really isn't that bad anymore, and it usually comes from one of a few places. Warren Distribution comes to mind.

Much more important is the frequency you change it, and the quality of the filter.

Here's a link to the full synthetic Triax brand if you decide to go full synthetic.

I ordered Triax 5w/40, 2 -2.5 gallon jugs for $89 delivered. It was actually cheaper to buy the 2.5 gallon jugs than the 5 gallon pail. Watch EBay and Amazon for the best deal.

Yo biggieSmallz...b4 pulling the trigger, hit up wallyworld, AZ, Oreilly..etc, and look for the Valvoline red container. That crap still CJ. I gotta few oil changes left. I use it in the 02. I scored on the Delvac back at Christmas time with their rebate going on. Now, that stuff is the CK but im flushing IT thru the L99 since thats my d.d.

I've been reluctant to make the move to full synthetic. Seems though that everyone who has, especially with Triax, is very happy. I switched to full synthetic in my Chevy Express (5W40 Valvoline bulk) and it would clatter on cold starts, switched back and no more clatter.

Only thing to add is yes, Walmart sells the Motorcraft 15-40 and 10-30 diesel oils, at least mine does. The stuff Walmart stocks varies by region. I can only get limited marine stuff at my local Walmart, but the one in Anchorage has a whole isle of it, along with some aviation stuff of which mine has none.

My mantra is fresh. Maybe a cold region will force synthetic or a different weight upon you, but otherwise just keep it fresh. As said above current oils are all pretty good since they meet the spec.
