Question 95 f150 tailgate

So my tailgate opens well, but I have to pull the latch all the way up and just wait for a click and I get nervous every time because it feels like its going to snap. Any suggestions of what this could be or how to fix it?

its a 95 f150 supercab 4x4 5.0L v8

May just need some lube. Pull the inside cover and spray it down with a moly lube

I didn’t realize how hard mine was to open until my Mother-In-Law tried (and failed) to open the tailgate. Popped off the cover, lubed latch liberally, and voila! Works like new!

Lubing the tailgate and hood latch and hood springs makes a huge difference!

Don't know how much different your '95 is from my '91, but when I took the cover off, i cleaned and lubed as mentioned above, but also saw that I could adjust the linkage connections, so the handle didn't need to be lifted nearly as high. Wife can do it now without whining.

The tailgate on my dad's '87 was kinda caved in on the back from something big knocking around in the bed at some point. The linkage was fouling. A little careful crowbar bodywork got it working much better.
