Is it possible to retrofit auto high/low beams?

Wanting to add the auto high/low beams that mine didn’t come with. Anyone done it? What’s involved?

The auto high-beam and lane-keeping alert functions (and perhaps the rain-sensing wipers as well) use a forward-looking camera located between the windshield and the front of the inside rear-view mirror. Just a guess on my part, but I suspect the retrofit costs would not be trivial.

Also, I don't know if you have used them or not, but they are garbage. I keep them turned off. I like a lot of the automated features, adaptive, lane keeping, auto wipers. The auto brights never seem to work right for me.

They work great but to add this feature after the fact, plan on spending 1-2K in parts, labor, and FORScan programming.

AFAIK, the 360 degree Ultimate Trailer Tow Camera System does not include the camera for the Auto high-beam-, lane-keeping alert-, and rain-sensing wiper system.

Our truck has the optional Tow Technology Bumdle, which includes all of the items above plus adaptive steering. We also ordered the extra customer-placed camera for the back of our truck camper. I really like the AS, the 360-degree camera system, and the extra camera. The AHB feature seems to work well enough, and I like that it can be single-event overridden using the turn stalk.

The lane-keeping alert works, but can be annoying. I’d like to see Ford add a setting that activates the LKA only when a trailer is connected; that really would be easy to do considering that the smart trailer module already talks to the truck.

The RSW feature is almost useless, IMHO, and I have it turned off. This is rather annoying on a 2019 vehicle considering that the RSW on our 2006 BMW E61 wagon, while not perfect, worked very well indeed.

Same here, I have 4 of the new super duties and the auto high beams are terrible. Comparing them to 6 other manufactures that I own they go into high beam mode when they shouldn't, and a simply pull on the stalk to reset to low only stays on for a short time. Additionally, pulling the stalk back into the low position doesn't keep them in low like it does with every other manufacturer, on these truck you must go back into the dash menu and turn them off there. Its the only feature that I don't care for on the trucks.

I had them in a 2015 f150 and they seemed to work very well. Would love to have the same functionality if the cost was reasonable.

Hmm, we have them on our rover and the super duty. They work perfectly and virtually the same on both vehicles. If anything the super duty is a little more conservative in its decision making, but works as it should. If yours doesn't work, take it in. Just wondering what could be impacting it? Maybe cab lights (which I don't have) or some other accessory?

I have auto High beam & auto wipers. Both are turned off. Auto wipers are WAY too fast for my liking. Put some RainX on the windshield & wipers can run 50% slower than the computer thinks they should.

I live in Suburban America. Auto high beams are super annoying. I get flashed ALL THE TIME with them on auto. I grew up in the sticks, and visit my folks in the country often. Auto high beams would be great in a more rural area.

I do not have lane keep assist or any other front cameras, so it is possible to have auto high beams without a front camera system. not sure how it all works, but good luck!

They work as designed, but it's a poor design. I have 4 of these trucks, and had a 17' that I sold that was exactly the same. I live in a rural area and they are marginal in that setting but once out of that environment they struggle. Completely unusable on a divided, multi lane expressways like I-95 with 3-5 lanes in each direction, they constantly come on with vehicles approaching from the opposite direction. The worst part of using the feature is needing to go into the menu to disable while driving. Using the stalk only turns them off for a short time.

The 2019 OM makes several references to the AHB system’s “sensor”, “camera sensor”, and “camera”. See pages 91 and 92.

Adding to comments above, I live in a rural area. I haven’t really tried the AHB system in an urban- or suburban environment.

I stated back in February that I thought the Ford auto high beam were a poor design (and I still think so). Yesterday on the way to work, at 3:00am, I was pulled over by the police. When I asked why I was pulled over the officer stated that I kept flashing my high beams on and off and asked why. I explained that my high beams were set on "auto". He didn't seem aware that there is such a feature. After asking if I had been drinking and if I had any weapons on me he said have a good day. I think that I'm turning them off for good.
