Hubs and Axels

2008 F-350. Strictly a plow truck landscape truck
Have has it for a few years no issues. While in 4 wheel drive, plowing the other night I’m getting a clunking up front when turning and reverse there is a rotational noise when backing up.
Local shop said new hubs for both sides and new axel shafts, the entire shaft. Hubs looks to be $350 a side. Axels 250 a side and labor.

My question is the outer shaft is the only thing that wears out. I guess he’s saying get the entire Shaft so he won’t have to push the ends on.
Also would this be the time to get all new rotors and pads for up front ? I figured if it’s all apart might as well put new stuff back on. Anything else should I replace ? Ball joints were replaced a few years back.

Looking for someone who has done this job for some pointers. Thanks

matt

Does your mechanic not want to swap universal joints? They are a potential source for your clunking. I'd recommend Spicer and greasless, u-joints with a zerk will last just as long, however that is with proper greasing.

I'd guess same as Bently...u joints need replacing......Entire axle shaft....sounds like he's trying to up sell you so he makes more money and avoids having to press in new u joints. Also keep in mind....just be the design of u joints themselves.......when turning in a tight radius you can still here clunking as the u joints rotate.
New hubs..hmmm hard to say without taking old ones out....do they still work and lock in? Do they still hold vacuum and allow esof to work?
Not a bad idea like you're thinking and replacing rotors and pads while everything is apart.

Its my understanding that he wants to replace the entire shaft so he wont need to press on the new ones. Ford sells the entire shaft. Local places sell the outer shaft only.
Hubs still lock good but he said the bearing is shot in the hub. It makes some creaking noises in 4WD but not terrible. 2wd its good.
I'm going to drop it off at a different shop for a second opinion
