A friend of mine was hit head-on (headlight to emblem) about a month ago. Each vehicle was traveling at ~50 MPH, an approximate 100 MPH collision. My friend was driving the white, 2017 CC, LB, F350, PSD. The other driver was in a 2016 CC, SB, F350, PSD, and was 'distracted' according to the Highway Patrolman. Both drivers were transported to the hospital - My friend had a broken ankle and a broken jaw. The other driver had 2 broken legs and other 'critical' injuries that we never learned more about. Most likely the result of the beefed up frame, but after examining the pics, I feel a lot safer in my aluminum truck.

 

that's not gonna buff out.

 

The technology is amazing. You can see where they wanted to direct energy in a crash if you look at the new frame. Glad no one was killed.

 

I'm glad everyone survived. The new truck looks like it maintained the integrity of the cab much better than the older model (as expected).

BTW, a head on like this is a 50 MPH crash, not 100 MPH. It's exactly like hitting a brick wall at 50 - the front of the truck hits a vertical plane and stops at that plane in both cases.

 

I wonder if the doors were removed on the 2016 to extradite or if they blew off from impact? Sounds like all may be OK which is great, but that 2017 cabin is in much better condition in this particular set of circumstances.

 

Glad your friend made it through that crash...it does look like the Aluminum cab did better but that could be a matter of the direction of the hit.

 

Aluminum absorbs energy differently than steel and the newer beefed up frame is another benefit in a crash.

 

One of the reasons I like driving bigger vehicles is that it increases the odds of survival if someone hits you. Odds are that whoever hits you will likely be in a smaller vehicle. In this case, the two were pretty equally matched weight wise and it does indeed look like the 2017 fared better. Good news that both drivers survived. I imagine the outcome would have been different for both drivers if the black vehicle had weighed half as much.

 

I think the passenger side tow hook on that white one is still usable.

 

Wow, really happy to read your friend had relatively minor injuries and that the other driver survived. Technology is great on the trucks. Seems like not that many years ago both of them would likely have died in that kind of crash.

On the subject of 2 vehicles head on both at 50 mph, it's actually a 50 mph crash for each vehicle. The same as a vehicle hitting dead stop into a wall from 50 mph. I always assumed that scenario represented a 100 mph crash for each vehicle but physics dictate otherwise.

An episode of Mythbusters years ago proved this to my satisfaction with real world demonstrations...

 

Very glad your friend is okay and that he was driving the better truck. He was alone in his truck? It looks like if he'd had family with him, they would've been okay too. Those pictures are horrifying to me, from personal experience, and make me very glad to be driving my dually.

Many years ago, I was hit head-on by a drunk driver. I was driving a company owned F150. The other guy was in a lifted Bronco. They put our closing speed at "over 90 mph" and my truck was bent in half - the rear wheels weren't touching the ground and the engine was up under the dash. I wasn't wearing a seatbelt and my face was smashed into the steering wheel while I was in the middle of cussing the guy out - I was right in the middle of yelling something along the lines of, "If I survive I'm gonna kill this motherf..." *boom* One of the worst injuries I had was from biting a dime size chunk out of my lower lip which was bleeding profusely down my coat and shirt, and horrified all the first responders (I also absorbed most of the impact through left arm, cracking ribs on left side, bent steering wheel in half, lower legs flew up into the dash but didn't break, and had severe whiplash). Moral #1 - big truck wins. Moral #2 - don't drink and drive, you could kill someone. Moral #3 - always wear your seatbelt. Moral #4 - if some drunk moron is going to hit you head-on, don't drop the F-bomb right at the point of impact.

Again, very glad your buddy is okay. Sure hope the 'distracted driver' has good insurance. And hey, your buddy will hopefully get a new rig.

 

That's why I drive a 2017 F350 6.7 and not some tin can Honda civic. Very glad to hear both drivers survived wow.

 

This type of Ford on Ford crime is just intolerable!
