Owners: Is the 6.2 worth 4K more than the 6.4 ram?
Hey guys. First off, yes, I realize that I'm asking this question on a Ford forum, hehe. I have noticed that this forum tends to be more honest than most.
After a month of research and negotiating, the cliff notes from my negotiating is as follows:
- Base model 4x4(tradesmen, XL, respectively) crew cabs run an MSRP of around 44K for both the Ram and the Ford, optioned how I like them.
- I can get the Ram for 34k, plus TTL.
- I can get the Ford for 38K, plus TTL.
I've driven both and honestly can't decide. What do you guys think?

Before I bought I test drove a 350 and 3500 back to back both gassers. I thought the 6.2 had more go even with 3.73's. 350 ride was better, the tranny is pretty bullet proof, and truck felt bigger, taller, firmer. The Ram was meh to me. Same old truck they've been peddling for years. I could of got the Ram Tradesmen with a diesel for 5K less than my 350. No regrets at all.

I will add this. If you are actually going to work the truck and haul heavy loads and trailers get the Ford you will be happier as the drivetrain is better. If all it is going to do is be a driver with minimal heavy work. Buy what suits you. Either way it's your money. Only one that has to be happy is you. Who cares what others think.

I actually wanted the Ram for a while because its suspension is a better platform for building an aggressive offroader. Honestly, I didnt love the Fords because of its ~10" longer wheelbase and, as mentioned, the significantly higher price tag (I was looking at 32-34k, vs the 38.5k I paid for my F250).
However, reliability was my top priority. After digging and digging for some real statistics or even anecdotes, I finally found a long thread (5+ pages) on one of the Ram forums about reliabiliy that basically included the following sentiments:
<20% of posts reporting no real issues.
>60% if posts reporting some modest issue requiring warranty work (leaks, electrical malfs, etc).
~20% of posts reporting major failures that were covered by the factory warranty.
My favorite quote, which also reflected the die-hard Ram loyalty flowing through the thread, was something like: "38k miles and I only had to have the transmission replaced one. Warranty covered it. Love this truck!"
That, plus some other info I found, really pushed me toward the Blue Oval.

The 6.4 Hemi is a great engine and I test drove several examples when I was shopping for a new truck. Yes, FCA was bargaining and cutting prices. At the end of the day, I spent more for the Super Duty, knowing that 10+ years from today and barring accidents, I'll be driving my Super Duty every day.
Ford builds a darn good truck.
