horrible sounds after transmission work

I have a 2018 4x4 STX 3.5 w. 10 speed with about 36000 miles on it. (Love the truck) Brought it into local Ford dealership for recall stuff, and had them look at the transmission because it occasionally shifted clunky. They decided to replace some actuators, they had to take the front wheels off and disassemble part of the front suspension to do it.

Now I have a intermittent horrible noise. It sounds like loose sheet-metal grinding and bouncing against open gears. It only happens very occasionally, usually when the truck is first warming up, at speeds between 20 and 40 mph, when I’m accelerating lightly. Of course because of that, they weren’t able to replicate it at the dealership.

Any ideas?

I can't imagine why they would take off the front wheels and disassemble the front suspension to fix a transmission problem. It sounds like what they REALLY worked on was the well known IWE malfunction. Check out the thread titled "Grinding / scraping noise from front end". Apparently they didn't fix that problem either.

Keep your phone handy and record the sounds for you to play for the dealership.

Bottom line seems to be that they did something to it so they should fix it.

You`re in a tough spot because you`ve reached the 36K but the best thing is to take it back to the dealer and leave it with them overnight. Since the problem occurs when it first warms up, get to the dealer early in the morning and go for a ride with a tech in your truck so he or she can hear the problem.

Why would they take the front suspension off for a transmission? I had lots of issues with my previous 18 truck that ultimately resulted in a buyback. You still have time left on your powertrain warranty and now is a good time to consider a ESP. Have you verified the splash shields under the truck are attached? There is one that sits really weird into the lower a arms.

It almost sounds like they did some work on the IWEs instead of the transmission. They’re known for making some ugly noises when they lose vacuum, which would explain the noise as well as why they were dealing with the suspension. Do you have a repair invoice? What were the part numbers they replaced?

This is true but the reason I mentioned the 36K is because the new problem he‘s having doesn’t sound like a PowerTrain issue.

I guess the only way to find out is to take it back into the dealer.
