Fuel Selector Switch Melting 89 F150

My tank seleactor switch melted. I was in the woods when this happened. I was able to get a schematic and cut the wires on the pigtail harness that goes to the switch. When I wired it to run off of the front tank it barely would go and the wires got real hot where I had twisted them together. I wired it to the back tank and all is good runs great and wires not getting hot. My question is will the fuel selector valve or the fuel pump cause these wires to get hot or should I look for a short in the harness? I would like to know before I replace the switch and melt it.
Thank you in advance.

Thank you Skip I will give that a try. It was weird when the selector switch stopped letting me toggle it I just thought something broke inside the switch. It was set to front tank but found out it was pumping gas from rear. Then today it went dead thats when I found the melt down.

The fuel selector valve is not switched by power, it's fuel pressure. You either have a shorted fuel pump (internal) in the front tank or as previously stated a short between the switch and front tank.Meter the power lead with reference to ground, set the meter to Ohms. The resistance should be very high. If it is, the front tank pump is shorted internally. If it is a very low ohm value the problem is between the switch and tank.

I have been checking wires and ohms. I feel it is the front tank pump even though it has low resistance when connected which could be an internal short in the pump. I can wire in the front tank turn ignition on pressure pumps leave ignition on and wires stay cool but once I crank and it is running the red wire gets hot then it starts spitting like it is running out of gas. That gauge in the front tank does not work anyways so I might as well replace the pump and float in it. Looks like a job. I have heard some people say it is easier to remove the bed then drop the tank. Thank you for your help with this.

I have done a few tank replacements and fuel delivery module change-outs over the years. Never have removed the bed. Use a couple of nylon ratchets straps to lower the tank after removing the metal holding straps. You can drop the tank down enough to remove the electrical connector and the fuel fill hose/vent, then drop it to the ground or a 4 wheel furniture dolly. Easy button.

I do not have 3 gorilla sized friends to lift a bed.

I would prefer to drop the tank it is full. I guess my brain is not working but I am confused on using ratchet straps to lower I have always used them to tighten things up never to lower something. What am I missing?

Those ratchet straps work in reverse as well. Not as convenient as tightening/lifting, but it is an effective device to lower heavy loads too.
