So my torque converter is disengaging and then reverse didn't work. I put in 4wd and reverse works. But when I put it back in 2wd it sounds like it's getting hung in between. I put on a vss but the torque converter still disengaged. I bought the vss connector but haven't put it on yet. I checked fuses and besides a couple looking old and dirty, I didn't see any that we're bad or disconnected. I recently had a similar problem and it was a fuse. Could a fuse not be disconnected or broke but still be bad? Any idea would be great since I don't have money to take it to a mechanic. You guys have been great in the past so I have a lot of confidence in this site and all you Saints that have helped me keep Big Blue going. Thank you in advance.

 

What do you mean by the torque converter disengaging? Describe what it's doing.

 

When I let off the throttle it seems to spin freely

 

It's supposed to release the torque converter lockup clutch when you let off the throttle.

 

I must not be doing a good job of describing what's going on. I will change the vss connector, change the #13 fuse and then maybe make a video so I can better describe it.

 

working in x4 and not 2wd, maybe something is not driving the rear drive shaft but will drive the front

 

I don't know what to do. Reverse is working in 4wd but when I put in 2wd it grinds when in reverse and park. It does go into drive though. No overdrive light or any other lights are coming on. I'm just not sure what to do at this point.

 

I suspect a problem in the transfer case.

 

I've been told to start with the transfer case linkage. I don't know how to do that but I'm going to see if I can find a video on YouTube. If Mark and the service advisor at Ford think it's the transfer case then I would imagine they are right.

 

There is an aluminum pivot lever that hooks the shifter in the cab to the t-case, pretty common for them to crack. Bud dealt with this, cannot really explain it further. Driver side, by the manual linkage of the E4OD.

Is this the "filler plug"? As I was putting on the VSS connector I noticed it was almost falling off. I tightened it down then finished the connector. I then pulled the truck forward about ten feet and noticed I had anti freeze leaking. That's new. Is it related or a separate issue?

 

Yes. That is the rear axle fill plug. 75W140 or 85W140 is what you want in there...did the anti freeze come from there???

 

No the antifreeze did not come from there. Why would it be loosened all the way to the last thread? And could that cause me problems?

 

Maybe the PO did not tighten the plug correctly. Is that your adapter on there too? Yes, a loose fill plug can cause issues...you could run dangerously low on gear oil. Parts can overheat among other issues.

Coolant loss is not fun. Probably radiator or water pump. Either way, may as well flush it all out and go with some Fleetcharge coolant that has SCAs in it. Consider a filter too.
