1986 E-150 6cyl Where is the water temp sensor? Is this it?

I have a 1986 E-150 with a straight 6, and the gauge doesn't work in the dash... I'm looking for the temp sensor to start there, is this it? Or is it somewhere else (and then what is this sensor that's circled?). The first photo is for context, and then a more close up photo of it.

Thank you in advance!

No ..... If it's like mine it is on the head, above the exhaust manifold, toward the rear. Will have one wire attached

The photo is of a later fuel injected engine, but the location is the same. Look under the exhaust manifold at the #6 cylinder [nearest firewall].

You can see the hole it's installed in directly underneath the left most exhaust port on the head:

Installed here:

THANKS you guys! Now I know I'm not wasting my time taking the doghouse off, I know just where it is. I appreciate it!

(Does anyone know what that sensor is, that I show in the photo...?)

Yes, that's the temperature sensor for the EFI setup. EFI systems will have 2 sensors. One for the gauge on the dash, and the other for the computer to adjust the fuel mixture.

Or, in the case of the 1986, the feedback carburetor and ignition system.

Oh right! I forgot they had that too. Reword that to "anything that uses a computer to determine how much fuel to apply"

Thanks again! You were right, I went through the work of removing the doghouse (I have an E150) and it was right where you guys said it would be... I swapped in a new sensor while I was in there since it was a cheap sensor and I had it on hand, but I really think it was just a corroded connection that could have just been cleaned up.

Here's a photo to show where mine was, for reference should anyone else find this thread while searching for answers.

Really? Don't you see the side of the engine, and the new water temp sensor...?

I posted it with the "attatch" buttons, and it's hosted by the Ford-Trucks site... my first post in the thread shows up, I know because people replied to the info it showed, could it be that it just didn't finish loading on the page you opened, or does nobody else see the photo either....? I want to know, so I can make the most of this site and for the benefit of people after me. I can see it, and I can see it without logging in from another computer at work...anyone else? Or am I doing something wrong?
