Sealing the axle flange

What is best way to seal the axle flange? As in, what sealant do you use and do you use a gasket or not?

I was going to once but it was a slight pain so I asked myself what for and didn’t. If you are going to just use RTV.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna try no gasket. Only thing I've used gasket maker in place of gasket has been a diff cover, I used
Permatex Ultra Grey Permatex Ultra Grey
and so far hasn't leaked a bit. Any preference in which RTV to use?

Any parts store will have those and they are dirt cheep. I've got steel ones so I just keep reusing them with a little sealer.

I checked and my local parts store has
Fel-Pro 55328 Fel-Pro 55328
which is steel. What sealer would you use on these? From some of the comments, you don't need sealant, which would be nice since I have to take axles out to service brakes.

the wheel bearing assembly seals the axle. If you were to submerge the axle, water would just flow through the brake backing plate (whether you seal the flange or not) as none of that can be sealed. The axle seal is sufficient on its own.

I'm not sure I follow. The back (inner) side of the hub has a wheel seal. The axle flange is what seals the outer side of the hub and stops the axle/diff gear oil from leaking out.

I have a set, the reduction of rear-end noise was remarkable. The axle race wear sneaks up on you and the increase in noise is not immediately noticeable.

I would add one caveat to installing the repair bearing/seal assemblies: There is the possibility that the O-ring seal between the bearing/seal assembly and the axle tube may be compromised during installation resulting in oil seepage. A thorough cleaning of the seam between the assembly and axle tube then filling that seam with black silicon sealer will prevent any unexpected leakage.

are we talking the 9”? I have been. There is an axle seal that gets pressed in, the. The axle shaft with bearing slides in.

The flange gasket goes between the end of the axle and the brake backing plate. That’s what I thought you were referring to.

Apologies if if I confused the issue.

Sorry, I assumed flange gasket was only applicable to full floating axles. I should have mentioned the specifics that I have a 1973 Dana 70 full floating axle.
