Need some help and advice
Okay guys picked up a 01 7.3 crew cab lariat that had some issues but got a good enough deal that I can put few parts on to fix it and sell. For starters truck wouldn’t hardly start found passenger side had wires melted together on valve cover plug pulled plug off separated wire and taped them up. I’m planning on replacing pigtails just wanted to make sure everything worked on truck before investing tons of money in it. Also discovered #5 injector was bad threw a used on in with new oring truck was running great. Then realized we have a bad brake line and stuck front caliper so parked truck in shop to lift on rack in morning to fix. Well got to shop this morning and lots of cranking and it trying to hit and no start. I hooked up ae and showing 33% ipr and 2000 icp while cranking I swapped out ipr with used one and little more cranking and it fires up. But I’m getting number 8 and 1 contribution fault. Truck has 266,000 miles I’m really thinking it’s time for new injectors glow plugs and valve cover harness what do you guys think? Any advice and opinions are welcome. I do plan on getting new pigtails and soldering them on and heat shrinking them on.

Well guys still needing some help on this truck runs good once u get it started in morning but it acts like the hpop resivour is draining overnight but what makes no sense is that it shows on ae it’s building oil pressure. Really has me puzzled I’d pull the hpop plug but it’s stripped out may just half to swap resivour out on it. To be able to see advice or help would be greatly appreciated

Okay glow plugs are good finally got it started it ran ruff for several minutes then I reved it up and it semi cleared up around 2500 rpms and started running smoother. Pulled passenger valve cover discovered first injector was barely oiling. It hardly made a difference when unplugging while running. So swapped it out with a know good used one truck definitely runs better now still has a little stumble in high gear. So I ran a buzz test flagged cylinder 1 so pulled valve cover on passenger side again. 1 injector was disconnecting must have accidentally knocked plug off while reinstalling valve cover fist time. Plugged back in truck is definitely running better left valve cover off going to see how the injectors are oiling in morning on a semi cold start. Going to check hpop level first and I’ll keep you guys posted.

Well started truck this morning hpop res was full still long cranked but not near as long. But truck was in shop last night. #3 injector wasn’t oiling at all while truck was still cold so I swapped it out to for a good used one. Then reinstalled valve cover and everything and took truck for drive wow runs much better. Going to do the same thing to drivers side tonight and try to get it atleast starting correctly and put few miles on it before getting a set rebuilt for it. I’ll keep you guys posted hopefully truck starts after all this.

What are the temps like where you are at, when you are starting it? I know cylinder 8 will commonly come up on a contribution test because it gets starved for fuel because it's at the end of the dead-end fuel rail in the head, and cylinder 6 (right next to cylinder 8) fires just before it. So, I wouldn't worry too much about having cylinder 8 come up on the contribution test. How does your EOT look? I believe a bad EOT sensor can cause it to run rough when cold.

Well yesterday started truck up and all three injectors that we hadn’t replaced on the drivers side weren’t oiling till it warmed up. I had new orings for one more injector so we replaced the injector that took the longest to start oiling. Truck runs pretty darn well now gonna put few miles on it and then get a rebuilt set of injectors for it. I’ll still keep you guys updated on the trucks progress.

Some hard start cold information from another site I visit now and then:
Injectors bad; Injectors with high miles (200,000 miles or more) can fail to operate cold. If correct PW displays while cranking you can remove the valve cover and watch the oil spill discharge, every injector should discharge oil when pulsed by the IDM during cranking. If no pulse of oil then the injector isn’t activating and putting fuel into the cylinders. Running several buzz tests cold will sometimes free up the injectors. This is a typical high miles problem particularly with inadequate oil change intervals.
