Y pipe of course. It's being Cummins converted so not putting much into anything engine-wise.

Woke it up pretty good. The y-pipe is a must do also though. Didn't go for headers like some because I knew I wasn't keeping the V10 long term.

My V-10 EX is a dedicated tow rig for an 11K TT, I run 5Star tunes al the time, mostly the 89 Octane Performance tune while towing. I sprung for the Banks headers and Y pipe, Aeroturbine 3030XL muffler, 4.88 gears and 35" tire's (effective ratio of 4.39). I love the tunes (87 Economy, 87 Tow, 87 Perf, 89 Tow and 89 Perf) I like the Perf tunes for my towing need's better than the actual Tow tunes, they are a better match for my driving style. Have not run with the stock tune in years. For a hard working V-10 gears are the biggest performance mod you can do (short of a custom turbo/super charger setup) and good custom tunes are next on the performance list.

The factory V10 cold air intake flows just fine, and pulls air from outside the engine compartment. Save your money and cancel that order...it won't net you ANY power and may actually decrease it. Yes you need the y-pipe.

Crawl under your EX and take good look at the factory "T" pipe, yeah you want an aftermarket "Y" pipe! If you do the Gibson shorties and leave that necked down abomination of a factory Y pipe under there I'm not sure that you would feel the improvement from the headers, it's that bad.
You most likely have the more common 3.73 gears and that 3V F-450 probably has 4.88 gears, big difference and like I said above gears are the single biggest performance improvement for the 6.8. What does your door sticker say below the "Axle" header, should show a letter and number code, that will tell us the gear ratio it left the factory with and if it's a Limited Slip differential.

Was that 250 mile drive towing something or on all dirt roads? 10.5 MPG highway isn't very good, if that's what you got I think you need to freshen up a few items on your low mile V-10. 72,000 miles is great but sometimes doing a bunch of sitting bring it's own issues, with only a lifetime average of 5200 miles per year you may need to do some 100K maintenance stuff a bit early.
New plugs and boots are pretty cheap and only take about 2 hours and a quick MAF spray cleaning is a good idea. Also check the air cleaner to ensure its not only clean but that it hasn't been turned into a mouse condo.
For a comparison my 120K V-10 EX with a 4" lift, 35"X12.8" tires, 4.88 gears, Banks headers and 5Star 89 Octane Performance tune recently got 14.5 MPG over 490 miles from Columbus OH to the Philly burbs with the cruise control set at 65 MPH the entire all highway trip, back when all stock it had a best tank of 15.5 MPG on a mixed driving trip.

My new to me 01 Excursion V10 looks to have the updated factory rams horn style y pipe. Thankfully not the original restrictive t pipe. Any idea what kind of performance increase that gave the V10? I wonder what a 5-Star tune would do MPG wise unloaded with this style Y pipe.

Ive got no illusions that the Ex will get anywhere over 10 mpg hauling a camper trailer, camping gear, 5+ adults and a full fuel load lol. Most of the trips will probably be just a loaded up Excursion and 4 adults, but hey every MPG counts!

I think that '01 was the last year for the rams horn style Y pipe, after that they went to the very restrictive T pipe to resolve an exhaust flutter sound that some folks heard. So your style is the original and the abomination is the "upgrade"! The rams horn is obviously better flow and performance wise than the T, owners who have upgraded from the T to a full flow smooth Y report a noticeable improvement in throttle response and a bit better umph at higher RPMs, rams horn owners who have gone with a full Y haven't seen as much improvement as the first group.
I have the 5Star 87 Economy tune and really didn't see much better MPG from it, it will get you into OD more quickly under even very light throttle but I think any improvement brought was within the +/- of my normal tank MPGs. Strange as it may seem, my best highway mileage after all of my mods, some of which are MPG decreasers came on the 89 Performance tune, 14.5 MPG at 65 MPH over 490 miles unloaded with 3 adults onboard and the AC on for over half the trip.
How tall, long and heavy of a TT will you be towing? My best towing mileage has been 9.5 MPG over 420 miles pulling a 12' tall, 41' long 11,300lb TT from Niagara Falls back home to the Philly burbs. Several other trips have been over 9 also, my goal is to eventually hit 10 MPG. I'll have a good chance to do that next spring on a nice flat coastal route to FL. I think with a shorter and lighter TT, the right gears and tunes that regular 10 MPG towing trips would be possible.
And I agree that every MPG counts, so much so that I make a hobby and game out of the idea, my warm weather daily driver is a '94 Geo Metro that I've hit several 63+ MPG tanks with so far, next Summer with a few more mods I'm shooting to get a 70 MPG tank.

Wow, so the rams horn Y is the original, and the T-pipe restrictor pipe is the update? No abnormal sounds or flutter and even if there was, Id rather have performance over an "improved sound".

My lady and I havent decided on the TT just yet. I know she has an idea to find a fixer upper and renovate the interior. Most likely in the 20-25 foot range as a max; she doesnt want anything too big if she's driving some legs of the trip. I of course want a big ole toy hauler with an upgraded hitch similar to the dimensions of your trailer haha. When the time comes, I think we find one in the middle. The most likely towing scenario is pulling a rented car trailer to take my Mustang to the drag strip. Looking forward to setting the car up on my lift and trailering to the track as opposed to driving there and swapping in the pit. Was no longer fun doing that haha.

My DD is a resurrected 97 Ford Taurus. Its definitely nice to have a car I can just put miles on and not worry about literally anything. Though, if/when the Taurus is retires, a little Focus, Corolla or Geo will be the next candidate.

I have a 2000 V10/4wd EX and run the 5Star on 87Perf all the time, towing or not. I bought the Y-pipe and have it scheduled to be installed tomorrow, so it'll be nice to see what kind of difference it will have over the original Rams Horn design and my 3.73 gearing with 285 tires. When I bought it last year, it was running 35s and no tuning. Slowly getting it where I want it to be, but I think my butt-dyno will likely see the biggest effect when I do a 4.30 re-gear.

skip the 4.30’s and go to 4.56’s. With larger tires you will be happy.
