Ran into another issue while getting started assembling the rear brakes on my 48 F2. The backing plates you see below came on the truck mounted on the original split case Timken axle but the parking brake cables had been removed long ago. I had the backing plates powder coated and I reassembled them and ordered new cables to run from the backing plates to center equalizer. I am pretty sure I have the correct cables (shown in the picture) but I am no longer sure the backing plates are correct, at least not the parking brake cable tube part. The collar on the cable is bigger than the tube on the backing plate. All the other internal components look correct. I believe I might have older backing plates for a 47 or earlier pickup that had the single cable that ran between the two rear brakes but I am not sure. Can somebody provide a picture of the back of their 48 to mid 51 rear backing plate emergency brake cable so I can see how it attaches and feeds through the backing plate. Any help is greatly appreciated. I would really appreciate a picture or two.
I just ran out and took a few photos, 48 f-1, think thats the wrong cable, Its been a while but the 2 rear parking cables are metal with a spring wrap, the front one is mostly a cable till it attaches up by the firewall where it changes over to the rubber/vinyl sheathing. Sorry if the photos are not to clear.
Here is one more, Im thinking your backin plates are not right, If you blow this photo up, it does not have that tube, nor do I recall it being on the inside.
You guys are awesome! These are exactly what I needed. It helps to have a few pictures when you are trying to put something back together with parts that may or may not belong together.
Understand that F1 and F2 brakes are different. What you're comparing might be apples and oranges. I'm not the F2 expert so I have no idea if what you have is correct. But you want to make sure you have the right intel before starting over. My 2c.

Thanks for all the information. Based on my research, the parking brake system on the F2 is basically the same as the F1 except for the longer cable between the cab and equalizer because of the longer bed length. The 48 to mid 51 F2 did have the Lockheed brakes but the parking brake cables from the center mounted equalizer attached to the rear backing plate in the same way and attached to the lever arm inside the brake assembly in the same way as well. Again, my understanding is the 1947 and earlier trucks did not have a sheathed brake cable like the 48 and new trucks did. On the older trucks, a cable ran between both rear brakes through the little tube shown on my first picture with the backing plate. In the 48 F2 rear brakes, I believe they eliminated the little tube that the cable ran through but maintained the same backing plate. Basically the new style rear parking brake cable clipped in as shown in the diagram from 52Merc. All that being said, I believe I have the wrong parking brake cables but the correct backing plates if I remove the little tube. The good thing is I have sourced the correct cables with the clips on them. Once I get everything put together I will post a picture so future people can use it as reference.
