USB port in center console is low amps
I've tried the center console USB to charge my Moto Droid Turbo 2 phone but it's not high enough amperage to keep it charging while using Google maps. Anyone know how to upgrade it to a higher amperage? I'm using an external USB and power port from the 12v plug under the radio to keep my phone charging.
Is there a USB port under the tray on the dash? I saw something in another thread about a hack that there is one under there if the tray is removed.

The console mounted USB port is worthless. I've never tried to mount a portable hard drive, for music, as I'm just not into carrying music around.
After 6 years of 12v charge adapters and the ensuing wires hanging in the floorboards, I got around to doing this. and these
I have one of these adapters in the dash aux 12 volt port as pictured

Not crazy at all. Ford has ALWAYS been far, far behind the market in providing "modern" features in their audio systems. How long did it take them to put an AUX jack, BT, or even USB in their systems after the aftermarket providers and other manufacturers had done so?
Hi-current USB port phone charging didn't really take off until a few years ago. For example, Qualcomm's QC 2.0 was only introduced in 2015. Hi-current USB specifications were only developed and adopted by the USB industry in 2012. All of the trucks you mentioned were designed and built years before any of those devices would even have been available.
