Can I install the tailgate step on a truck without it?

Can I install the tailgate step on a truck without it?
Was thinking about seeing if I can retrofit the fold out step in the tailgate on a truck that did not come with it installed from the factory.
What parts would does this entail?

It's super easy! Just get the entire tailgate with the step in it and have the shell painted to match if you can't find the color you need. Other than that the shells are completely different .

I heard that the price for a replacement tailgate with the step exceeded $1500. That's probably why they get stolen a lot.

And that's why we put a McGard on our tailgate hinge. It's probably cheaper, if not simpler to get an add-on step.
