Trailer Special emblem question...

Good evening!

I have a question about my 1978 Lariat. I have a Trailer Special emblem that I would like to replace on the rear tailgate. I have enclosed a picture of the replacement to give you an idea of what it looks like. I'd just like to know, is this disassembly of the tailgate really worth my time? I'm also assuming that there is no other way to swap out the emblems except for disassembling the tailgate. Anyone who has done this, could you provide some feedback? Is it a difficult process? Thanks in advance....

I'll bet the emblem is either held on with double sided tape, or it has studs with barrel clips on it. Either way, no need to disassemble the tail gate. The emblem should come off if you carefully pry it away from the gate. Best way to know for sure is to buy the new emblem & see what is on the back.

Parts catalog says:

D6UZ-1142528-A .. Trailer Special Emblem-Includes attaching parts, so it used clips to retain it.

1976/82 Econoline; 1977/79 F150/350; 1978/79 Bronco.

Back then, very few emblems were retained with double sided tape.

So the question is, how do I get to the other side of the tailgate? Is it a quick, easy disassembly? The emblem would rally make the back "pop" but I don't want to disassemble the entire tailgate. Thanks for any help...

Take something like a plastic screwdriver and pry it off, there are plastic bushing that press fit into the holes on the tail gate that the studs press into.No need to take the gate apart.

That emblem is held on by pins and is serviced from the outside not inside the tailgate.

Not to hi jack but question for ND on this. I swear back in the day I had seen LTD wagons with that emblem on the top edge of the rear bumper, did they also have a bumper with holes or did they make the double side tape for those?

No Ford passenger car of any year was a Trailer Special.

The Trailer Special emblem has pins on its backside, uses expandable barrel clips to retain it to the tailgate.

Pry off the old one and get barrel clips here https://shop.broncograveyard.com/searchprods.asp insert them in the tailgate an then push on you new shiny TS tag.

It was many years ago and my memory is not perfect. When I bought my ‘78 new, they had a few trucks that were “Camper Specials.” That is what I remember. Could it be that they made both a “ Camper Specials” as well as a “Trailer Special?”

Yes they did, I always thought the Camper special was for the slide in campers and Trailer special was for the towing.

Another question - do the F150 emblems and Lariat emblems work the same way? If so, that makes them easy to upgrade!

The F150 emblems work the same way, pegs & barrel clips. The Lariat emblems are held on with double sided tape.
