I want to make two matching gas pumps to under the overhang of my pole building. I can't afford the $$$ to buy restored or even unrestored units which, like our trucks, usually cost more in the end that if we just bought restored. There are also a few places that sell reproduction pumps in the $2500+ range. I figure with the parts I can buy locally and the scrap metal I have laying around I could build a matching set for less than $500. They won't be exact replicas, which I don't really care about, but they will be close enough to fool the average person and make me happy. Also, they'll be spending most of their time outdoors and will be in the elements so I wouldn't want really nice original restored pieces.
I know the members here are multidimensional and dabble in many different projects. Also, it is truck related. Who wouldn't want a vintage pump to go with their vintage truck? Has anyone build their own vintage style gas pumps? I have an idea of how I'm going to achieve this. I want to make the visible type, the kind with the glass cylinder. I have mental plans to have them fill the cylinder with gas (orange antifreeze) by pulling on a side handle (using a small electric pump and switch) and then draining the cylinder back when you trigger the nozzle.
Wow....that will look great.......it's ashame you didn't make it out to the Hershey swap meet this weekend....there were plenty of those pumps and 50's pumps for sale as well.......I even saw jay Leno!....... and also pretty sure I saw mike wolf and his brother from American pickers.......there is absolutely everything out there!.....
Never been to Hershey, have always heard from other what a great meet it is. I have to settle for Iola here in Wisconsin, but still don't make it there most times.
From discussions I've had with different people you can find original pumps all over for low prices or even free. I have never seen either personally. I've gone to actions and the junk ones, needing way too much work sell for twice as much as what I think I can build two for. Also, if I did get an original pump I know I'd want to restore it back to original shape. If I could afford to do that I wouldn't want to let it set outside exposed to the elelments.
I don't know if this will work here but this was posted on Facebook a while back. This is the basic idea but instead of using PVC pipe I'll build a base using 12 ga steel I have.
Well, the FB link doesn't seem to work. There's a guy on FB called Green Goblin Customs that made a visible gas pump with a piece of PVC sewer pipe, a couple of frying pans, lexan and some other simple parts. It look pretty good.

I am sorry that I can't be of much help on the gas pumps, but I think you have the perfect setting for them. I wanted to comment on your building, the overhang and three tone really look sharp. That is a good looking building.

I have restored many vintage gas pumps over the years, including visibles. clock faces, and regular pumps All the parts are readily available, including globes, decals, clear cylinders, hose, and any other part you need.
Gas Pump Heaven, Vic's Place, and others sell complete repro pumps for around $1,500.00.
I have bought many pumps by just driving around in the countryside and spotting old pumps outside of barns. Try it and you will be surprised at how many you can dig up.

Mark I checked out one of the places that sell the reproduction pumps, their price was in the $2500 range and the globe and another part, I don’t remember was in addition to that, I figure using parts like the guy in the video and the scrap metal I have I can build a pair for less than $500. I don’t care about originality, I just want something that looks close. Like with our trucks, 99.9% of the population doesn’t know if something is original, they just like nice looking things. Also, from my discussions with different people vintage gas pumps are a lot like flathead V8s. Half dozen people will tell you’d be lucky to find a decent one for $1000, the next dozen will tell you that they stumble on free good ones on a monthly basis. I live in a relatively rural area and my wife’s family, along with my oldest son, are farmers and I’ve never found an old pump. I’ve seen them come up for auction quite a few time and the junkers missing major parts sell for $500-750+ while restored ones sell for $3000+.
I've stumbled on a few down here in New Mexico, but they are not cheap. The folks that have them around here are all alchemists. They believe they can turn rusty metal into gold.
