Aftermarket cams

Has anyone used an aftermarket cam where they actually can say there was no loss in mpg or it improved?

Jack give Anthony a call. They have something cooked up.
We have a guy here that has his own mix too and he seems to have a good rep with it.

More of a point that he is the only one I know that has been playing with different cams.

I know Asheville Engine has a custom cam. I don't know if they would sell one outside of their rebuilds though. My friend has this cam in his Asheville long block.

I've been punching around a different cam for a few months now. I've confirmed although the motor was rebuilt in 2010, it does have the 2003 profile in it which you can no longer buy, not the 2004 through the 6.4L cam sold by dealers. It's got the lobe separation that puts in between the 2004 cam and most Stage 1 or 2 cams. But not the lift. Good mileage, good punch. It seems like most private label cams are actually from Colt, with a few variations.

I've sat with it for days, calling it my precious while I slowly clean the lobes and journals.

I'm on the hunt for one of those precious 2003 cams too. With my engine needing to be rebuilt, it's the perfect time to sneak one in. I too am curious about aftermarket cams, but would be ecstatic if I could find a 2003 engine with a good cam in it.

I'm pretty sure CAT reworked this cam as a rebuilt from the base circle inconsistency of #8.

Why not talk to one of the custom cam places that they used to talk about during the Power Block can show.

My understanding was those cams were emissions marginal before the 6.0L hit the dealers lot. All the '04 mid changes were to get into compliance.

My gut is this was a hurt cam reground for the motor. From what I experienced in my restoration years cam regrinders prefer to shrink the lobes into compliance, and you really see that in the base circles. But not is not a concluding measurement. You have to know the spread from the journal diameters to the lobe peaks or the lobe base .... or both. If they weld up worn or damaged lobes, the cam gets distorted, needs to be annealed, straightened, then rehardened.

We all know stock pushrods got reduced in length, to me a fascinating event if someone FUBAR'd the lifter clearance values from the get-go. But if the lobes are shrunk during a regrind, shorter pushrods are not the thing to do. Dynamic Diesel talks about their stage 1 cam with reduced base circles and the need for the 2003 original length rods, or you wipe the lobe for example.

So with my lack of lifter pump-up after a long sit, which is what got me into this motor, I'm heading down the worry trail with a drop of 0.010" base circle on the 8 exhaust. The pushrods are the shortened ones. I'd rather have new, but not an option.....

One other place to ask and they are the ones that made the oops on a can that cost a lot of time and $$ for someone we know.
BUT they were the go to guys around here for any cams.

Guess I missed that. There's usually at least one cam grinder in every state, or at least there was. But the way the 2003 cam profile got dropped, I'm not sure the data is out there for the profiles. Especially with everyone "fixing" the profile.

Asheville Engine sells two different stage 2 cams. One is our own design which is built much the same as other companies using a stock core. We also sell a Straub Technologies stage 2 which has a different lobe separation than a stock cam.
both are on our website under "products"

Give Maryland cams a call. (They might be still be called Camcraft)They always made me proud on my custom big block applications. IveI heard that the 6.4 cam works very well, but I've not tried it myself.

That reminded me that there is a custom builder in Tacoma that uses a modified 6.4 cam in his 6.0s that he builds.
He also still uses Delta Camshaft for his work. If you want I can dig up his shop's name for you.
