School me on Ford alternators

My 66 alternator has bit the dust, the parts van alternator has a squalling bearing.I assume these are referred to as 1G alternators/ I have a 92 f150 5.8 parts truck, Is it a 2G/3g?.Can i make it work on the 66? Thanks.

I am going to guess that new ALT is a 3G and if it will bolt up should work but ..... you need to rewire your charging system wiring to handle the higher amps or you can have a fire.
Heavy gauge wire from ALT to battery with mega fuse, bypass the AMP gauge just off the top of my head.

Go over to the 80-86 truck area and think at the top in FAQ area or Tips there should be information on a 1G to 3G ALT swap.

I would say if you don't need the extra amps rebuild 1 of the ALT you have now.

Thanks for the input. I really do not need extra amps, will probably rebuild one of the 1G. My luck with the 1G is that it is very dependable, just wondering if there are any benefits to the swap.

3G has more amperage as already mentioned, but also does not require an external voltage regulator, which is one less thing cluttering the engine bay and simplified wiring.
