Speedo no bueno

I have a 1985 F150, 4.9l i6 and cannot get the speedometer working for the life of me. I've bought a brand new cable that matched the old one exactly from Jeff's bronco graveyard. I swapped that out still didn't fix it. I noticed that the 17tooth gear looked a little worn on some of the gears so I bought a new one and just replaced it today, still not working. I do not have a speed sensor. It's a pretty simple setup, instrument cluster to tranny with nothing in between. Any suggestions?

Tried the drill method and she fires right up so maybe something is not meshing in the tranny?

Yup. Something wrong with the drive gear in the trans by the sounds of it.

Can you look in the hole with a mirror and a light and see if the drive teeth are damaged and/or missing?

You can buy a new drive gear, but you have to pull the transmission and disassemble to replace;(

I don't if you would need to pull the trany or not but the drive gear should be on the out put shaft.
You might be able to pull the drive shaft & tail housing and get to that gear.
I would check with a trany shop to see what they say if it can be done like I said above or need to pull like Rembrant said.
