Rebuilt 2002 F350

Hello, I have found a 2002 F350, well taken care of with a rebuilt motor that has 50,000 on it. They have given me the opportunity to take it to my mechanic and it starts well, no smoke, so far my list is checking out. What do you think about rebuilds?
Advice is appreciated.
Tim

As long is not blowing too many fumes or blow by from the engine and everything else checks out and you like it, buy it.

you need paperwork proof of the builder, and research if the shop has a good reputation

As long as it starts easy when cold, doesn't leave a blue smoke trail down the road, and no oil leaks hit the ground, I'm thinking you are golden.

A rebuild on these is crazy expensive. Documentation would be nice to see what really happened, but if it's good, it's good, regardless what level of rebuild they did.

Unless it's a 2wd 2 door, then I'd walk.

All good info- thanks, i checked fluids, blow by non existent, fired right up with no smoke, fired right up. Made an offer- $5000 less then he wanted- will probably get rejected. He wants $22000

No way I would give $22,000... I don't care if it had a hoped up engine from Swamps Diesel in it. It looks nice, but no way...

The rebuilt engine does not scare me away, if everything checked out and it started (from cold) and ran well during a test drive.

I looked up the Delgato Auto Sales sign with the 919-542-xxxx phone number and see that is NC. No way for $22,000 in my book. Maybe he is trying to get a high price from the soldiers at Ft. Bragg, not sure...

Unless we are missing something here, I would walk away from that price. Although, the truck is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If you want the truck bad enough and would be happy with a price of $17,000, then by all means buy it and smile all the way home. Keep us updated on what happens.

Here's the deal, even a DIY rebuild is expensive. I'd get permission to do a compression check, then I'd take it to a reputable alignment shop and go over it with a fine tooth comb. For $22k that had better be pristine in every way....like having a BTS trans installed, no damage at all to the interior, new tires, not a rust bubble anywhere. That's real coin for something that is 17 model years old.

$22K is ridiculous. Even in like-new condition everything is old. I wouldn't be afraid of a rebuild either (like Sous said) but I'd be curious to know why it was rebuilt. There are exceptions but these blocks are pretty stout and will put up with a lot. I've had more than my share of issues and am still going at 314K miles without pulling the heads.

KBB value is nowhere near that but the market still bears some crazy prices as people are still willing to pay out the wazoo for the 7.3L.

Just to give you an idea I paid $22K for mine in 2007.

If you love it then it's worth what it's worth to you.

Hmmm...

Right front is on a steel (spare?) wheel, no Powerstroke badges, and the tailpipe does not look like my original one did. I suspect this a "late" '03 with the 6.0L (if it's a diesel) or, in fact, a gasser.

I do love the color though . If only my clearcoat looked that good!

Just sayin'

You beat me to it. That's what I get for leaving the reply window open and getting distracted for 10 minutes...and then posting a Quick Reply instead of editing my post.
