5th Wheel Towing

Is anyone towing a 5th wheel at approximately 11,000 pounds with their 2019 (or '17 or '18 I suppose) F-250 (diesel, 4X4, shortbed CC). I'm trying to see if I am going to need air bags this time. They were really great on my '11 and '08. My 11K is my tow weight as I am normally loaded. I know the airbags from my '11 won't fit, but I'd like to see if I even need them. The new truck does have the camper package which is supposed to add an extra spring in the rear (per the Ford website). Will it be enough to forego the airbags this time?

Yeah yeah, I'll get my signature stuff updated.

I think this is more of a matter of preference rather than need. You really shouldn't need them at that weight but you may prefer to have them, especially if you are used to having them. I'd say try it without them and then decide whether you want them or not.

My dad routinely towed a 13K 5er with his Chevy 2500 and Timbrens. Truck/trailer were level and he was happy with the ride. Just another option.

Do you know your pin weight off hand? May help if someone with a similar pin weight can reply.

I can't remember the pin weight. I had it weighed a few years ago with my '11 F-250. But I don't know where those numbers are. That's why I was going for an approximation. I understand it won't be exact, but just trying to get an idea.

Pin weight is around 20% which is 2,200 pounds. It may not be that much but its the max number to use to be safe. I prefer air bags because they are adjustable. I also like them because they work well with the stock shocks to help cushion the ride unloaded. I wouldnt have a truck without them. A F150 doesn't need them because you normally dont load it with 2,200 pounds of weight.

Are there any particular air bags you guys recommend? I'm looking to add some to my rig, with a compressor to adjust easily.

I had the Firestone Ride-Rite airbags on my '11 and my '08. Never had a reason to complain. If you don't want to run wires and stuff through your cab, I highly recommend a wireless remote compressor. I have the Airlift, and again, never had reason to complain. Well, I did have to replace the compressor once, but it was a pretty easy replace. No real issues though. And it's super nice being able to adjust the bags "on the fly".

My F350 has air bags at 15psi. Sits level with over 2700Lbs on it. I drive empty at 10psi. It drives better than stock with the air bags. I have the Firestone ones.

Oh wow...I guess I should update this. I have decided that I do not need airbags so far. I have towed now on 3 trips, and it tow beautifully without the airbags. I have the camper package, which adds the extra leaf, and that is plenty for what I have. It sits perfect with the camper hitched up, and handles moderately rough roads very nice. Even the bad roads it does pretty well on. I am impressed with this truck so far. Below is a picture all hooked up and getting inspected (yeah, Texas has a stupid trailer inspection. Gotta have it before you can get it registered).
