Bad Vibration from 70mph +

Guys,

My truck has a bad vibration that starts at 70/75 mph and goes up. I've had the tires balanced and the truck aligned and I had the drive shaft balanced. The shop I have it in to for repairs is running out of ideas to try but we both found an interesting link about this problem here: https://www.supermotors.net/clubs/fo...olved-on-my-ex

Does anyone know where to get a good 3 degree shim kit that fits our trucks we can try? I figure this should be a relatively inexpensive next step, before I need to take more expensive steps.

WFO concepts has the 3” wide devree shims but before you go and buy a 3* you should measure your angles because what worked for that guy may not work for you since your front or rear ride height is likely different and both of those affect your driveline angle.

to measure your angles read this
https://www.drivelinesnw.com/part-tr...ngle-problems/

and this
Tom Wood's Custom Drive Shafts - Tom Woods Custom Drive Shafts Custom Driveshafts Specialist

then use this to see what shims you need
https://spicerparts.com/calculators/...gle-calculator

and don’t forget that you will need longer leaf spring center pins to hold your shim in place as well as new U bolts.
wfo concepts sells those as well.

If you do not already have an inclometer these little digital box ones work well for drivelines because they fit on the UJoint boss without hitting the flange. Makes getting the angles a snap.

**** make sure to park on a flat level surface when taking your measurments......

just curious..... do you have a C.V. joint on your drive shaft now or single joints at each end ?

I wonder if my springs are just too damn old and worn out, affecting the angle - maybe I should start with the B and V code spring update and go from there. I have the original springs on the truck still and I am thinking about towing a 35" travel trailer anyway... thoughts?

Not sure about the C.V joint Pirate - she's at the indy shop now but I can call them on Monday to find out. Does it make a difference? I think its all stock still.

Possibly.

the engine and transmission are tilted back 2* relative to the frame from the factory that way when the stock ride height is set 1” lower then the rear ride height the out shaft is actuall level, Like in figure #2

when your front leafs sag it points the rear output shaft up a degree of so, this results in the Tcase out put not being parallel to the pinion shaft and you get something like figure #4 but with the pinion rotating down instead of up as it shows..... still bad.

course of action.

1. Measure front and rear ride height.
Measure from the center of hub to bottom of the fender lip. Factory ride height was 23” front 24” rear
if out of spec by more then 1/2” correct.

2. Shim rear pinion so outputs are parallel if using a no C.V. driveshaft.

3. Shim pinion so rear pinion is in-line with shaft if using a C.V. driveshaft.

I think I am going to try the B and V code springs first, because I was going to do that mod anyway to help with towing. Once that is complete, I can try 70+ mph again - if the vibration is still there, then I can take measurements and adjust the angles appropriately. If I try to take measurements and fix the angle first, then I may mess it up again after I put the new springs on.

Where is the best place to get B and V springs (what is the best site sponsor?)

transmission??? I had a vibration that started at 75ish and did wheels, tires, driveshaft balance, ball joints, etc etc etc, pretty much everything.

i would recommend the WFO shims, i really like those, i got the 2 degree shims and new ubolts from ATS

Long story short, my transmission quit going forward, ended up being loose fluid feed bolts that also are used to secure the center support. New bolts and my transmission works and that vibration is gone.....just something to consider

Update - the shop sent my drive shaft out to be balanced again and this time it worked out about 90% of the problem. I'm going to live with it for now, until I get new leaf springs for towing, then I will measure angles etc to get it as perfect as possible.

I started getting a vibration about 75 which has ended up putting some odd wear in my tires after doing the mod-b rear springs. I just did new u-joints with no joy. Trying to figure out what I may have done to cause this, thought maybe i put some weirs stress on the driveshaft during the spring swap. Kinda stuck at the moment also.

when you change springs you can change the angle that the pinion sits at, those angles determine the harmonics of the ujoints. See my post #6 and #7

The fix is to measure the angles of your setup, make the calculations and adjust the pinion angle accordingly using shims.
