Transmission - What is considered Hot?
2017 Ford F350 6.7 Crew Cab 4x4 - pulling a 38' Toy Hauler totaling approx. 15000 lbs.
I decided to go to one of my old stomping grounds which consisted of 16 miles of up hill with switch backs and traveling between 10 to 30 mph. My trans. temp. topped out at 253 degrees, the clutch fan did come on and dropped the temp along the way. There was never no lights, bells or whistles, the gauge was close to the red but never in red. I am no rocket scientist but 253 seems pretty hot for a trans. Maybe a Ford mech. can chime in here and give me a little info. I have a buddy that has a Ram 3500 and says his has never been over 200 degrees.
My old 2003 F250 7.3 pulling a 33' Toy Hauler approx. 13000 lbs. I would have to pull over and let the trans cool a few times along the way. I ended up adding a 33 core trans. cooler, the temp gauge never bugged it always ran cool after the added cooler.
Is there a trans cooler out there that can be added to keep temps. cooler?
Anyone with answers please chime in. I could be wrong but 353 seems really hot.

253F does indeed appear to be "hot" according to this Ford document (see page 3). Here's a snip:

Yeah, 253° F is hot. Mine has yet to exceed 235° F but it's been close. Once it hits 240° F I'm going to pull over and let it cool down. These transmissions like to run hotter than in the past. They are more efficient at the warmer temperatures. Still, when I see 230° F I throttle back just a bit. In my prior half ton truck I would be gearing down to provide more fluid flow to the transmission. I tried that in my F-350 but it didn't seem to make much difference in the transmission temperature.
If I remember correctly, 270° F is the point where the fluid may start to have problems (breaking down).

Did you have any problems with the install of that oil pan? Was the OEM gasket reused? I don't remember the details of your install. Based on your results it's a good mod to do.
I'm headed to Elk Camp this Thursday. We'll be hunting Saturday and - if my past luck is any gauge - for the next 8 days also. New guy to our group said that we wouldn't need food past Wednesday. I like his optimism. I also told him he could run into town for groceries.

Jim, I first ordered the Mag Hytec pan and even though they said that it would fit, that pan only left 1/4 inch clearance to the cross member. I ordered the ATS, which holds a whopping 8 quarts more fluid and it fits perfect. It uses the factory gasket which is reusable. I believe the hard pulls up the mountain grades are ending before the extra 8 quarts have a chance to heat up. None the less, I'm not worried about my tranny temps any more.
I'm heading to elk camp Friday too. Our elk population is way down this year but I found a decent heard. I have to backpack this year and if I get one, I'm not looking forward to the pack job. It's gonna be an adventure though. Good luck out there in this new hot spot of yours and be safe. I'd be skeptical of the food situation!!! I may need the whole four weeks of season to get it done this year!

Again, I think its still for when utilizing the PTO - moving or not moving. That entire document you linked it solely about and for PTO. I am not saying those numbers cannot transcend over to "daily non-PTO driving" I would just take it with a little grain of salt as when the PTO is being used that's more stress on the transmission.
