Rarest 73-79 Camper Special

Hey everyone. I was wondering if anyone knows what is the rarest Camper Special 73-79 Ford Truck? I haven't really found any good literature online indicating a clear winner.

Sounds awesome. Do you have any photos of her?

Great question. Mine isn’t the rarest by far but I got the 8000 gvw. I’d like to know.

The only way you'll discover what the rarest Camper Special is, is by contacting martiauto.com, as Marti has all the original 1967/79 FoMoCo records.

Marti charges a fee for info like this, you have to contact him and ask how much.

And btw: There are no codes within the VIN or stamped on the Warranty Plate that decode to a Camper Special.

I agree with you, about there is nothing that specifically says in the VIN decode. However as you begin to work through the truck, and bring her back to life there are certain tells, that point you in the direction of letting you know she is a camper special . Sometimes she has a badge, sometimes it's the two battery bays in the engine compartment, and on the rare occasion she still has her original book she came with from the dealership. Thank you for letting us know where to find the other info.

Hands down, the rarest camper special is one with low miles and no rust.

Dual batteries were an option for all 1973/79 F100/350's.

The Owners Manual was provided by FoMoCo, not by the dealerships.

dual batteries, badges and of course the camper tie downs under the bed. Do you know if CS’s had to be XLT’s?

Camper Specials could be Customs, Rangers, Ranger XLT's, or 1978/79 Lariats.

Camper tie downs only came with trucks if they were equipped w/a FoMoCo over the roof camper, also available at the parts counter.

Thanks for the info. So it didn’t need the Ford tie downs to be one. I didn’t know that. So basically a camper special got a badge and anything else could just be ordered for any truck.

Almost anything else...
Camper Specials have a unique tail lamp harness, as it has an extra feed wire for the pigtailed wiring harness/plug used for camper clearance lamps.

This harness was placed inside the glove box at final assembly.

I would think that the rarest Camper Special would be a '79 F350 Supercab 4X4 one. I have one of these trucks, and according to my Marti report, it's a Trailer Special. I had never heard of a Trailer Special until I became a member of this page about 6 years ago. My truck has a flatbed on it, so the original tailgate with the Trailer Special emblem is long gone. Can anyone tell me what the difference is between a Camper Special and a Trailer Special?
