1977 F150 Carb Issue

I just picked up a 1977 F150 that has a newer Motorcraft 2100 carb, and on startup, it's requiring a pump of the gas pedal, and spitting gas somewhere around the carb while running. When I picked it up, it was trying to stall at stops under load, so I adjusted the idle to run a bit higher and that seemed to fix it until the new problem popped up.

I had it at the shop for a different issue, and they're wanting to replace or rebuild the carb, which seems unnecessary, as it seems newer. My initial thought is that the gas lines to the carb were not replaced and are dry rotted, or the choke is sticking, but does anyone have any ideas what it could be? Can give more information if needed!

First thoughts are if it’s spitting gas “somewhere” around the carb, you could have a stuck float, needle and or a gasket leak. Rip her off and disassemble, clean her up and set your float and go from there.

I would rebuild the carb if I were you. Rebuild kits are cheap, and pretty easy to install. Just because it looks "new" means nothing. Don't be afraid to dive in and tear down the carb, it's not as intimidating as it seems, just a bunch of small parts, so you want to do this in a clean area (kitchen table lol).

Was finally able to have a buddy start the truck while I watched, and I noticed that the gas was coming mostly from the Fuel bowl EVAP vent tube on the front of the carb. Have a rebuild kit coming in the mail, but any potential "quick fixes"? I did notice that the line to the charcoal canister is not on, but have read just venting that line is okay.

Stuck needle, stuck float. You need to rip it apart anyway, like the other guys say, may as well put the rebuild kit in at the same time and save yourself the trouble of ripping it apart multiple times.
