Advice on 1st oil change

Reading through all the threads and this will be my first oil change. I'm pretty sure i'm going to go with Shell Rotella T6 5W40. Found it for 51.69 for a case with 3 gallons. Is all shell T6 now CK4 and this is approved by for now correct? Is this a way better option than T5 15W40 synthetic blend? Thanks in advance for any advice!

I used the Shell T-6 a lot on my 2011 and 2015 trucks. With the dust up over the CK4 approval, I switched over to
Valvoline 5W-40 Premium Blue Extreme Synthetic Diesel Engine Oil when my first oil change came around on my 2017 truck. It is usually $62 on amazon, But I found it on sale this week
at Autozone for $13 a gallon.

I do prefer the full Synthetic in colder weather.

Well not to start a issue but following my normal process on new trucks changed my oil 3 weeks ago at 1800 (try for 1500) miles with AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty Synthetic Diesel 5-40 and a EA series filter.

Thanks for the info that looks like a good option as well and not a bad price on sale. That is a CK4 no too correct? My weather is Arizona so 118s on average days now and winter times at lowest get to 30 usually.

i just called Autozone. It’s the 15W-40, not the recommended 5W-40 Valvoline PBE that’s on sale.

The on sale Valvoline 15W-40 is not on the Ford WSS-M2C171-F1 approved list.

Here is the the list of all Valvoline oils that currently meet the spec.

Yeah i was looking at their ad and noticed that. Was going to drive by the store but thanks now i don"t have to. I was set on the Shell T6 but didn't know if there was some additive in the now CK4 that was causing wear issues that maybe a brand like Valvoline PBE didnt contain. I like the full synthetic, I think that seems to be a good option for those who change their own oil. When i talked to the ford dealership however they advised me Ford recommended the synthetic blend motorcraft over full synthetic. Not sure why? If that is the case i could do the Shell T5

While your at it, install a Fumoto drain valve at this time. And from now on, no more messing with a drain plug and wrench, much cleaner too.

Good to know. I bought 3 gallons of the 5w-40 off Amazon and just grabbed 1 gallon of the 15w to top off my 13th quart. Glad I didn't buy a bunch and try to stock up.

My F450 just rolled over 1700 miles and I am thinking about changing the oil.
I have Rotella oil left over from my 2015 and after reading about oil for these engines it seems it may not be suitable?
I just had a trip to the Black Hills towing about 10k. Are there additives in the factory fill that I should leave in for a while longer?

After reading all about this I came across a lot of people who said that there are additives in the factory oil and that they need to be ran through completely for proper break in. I see all sides to what people choose to do but I have decided to wait now as I only have 2900 miles on mine. This will also give me more time to decide the oil I want to go with as well!

Ford changed the spec for the 6.7L diesel to WSS-M2C171-F1. Now Ford states not to use CK-4 oil unless it meets spec WSS-M2C171-F1. Not all CK-4 oils meet the spec.

Heres the current list of oils that meet CK-4 and WSS-M2C171-F1

I have 6 jugs of Rotella synthetic in CJ-4, I assume this is safe to use?
And what is going on in Canada with the price of oil filters at the dealer? $33 bucks? I told them to keep it.
I have a few oil filters from the 2015 6.7. I wonder if these with fit the 2017?
