My truck came with no fobs from the previous owner. I'd like to buy replacements online yet it seems there a multiple OEM variants. How can I determine the correct one for my truck? Note that mine is a 2003 F150.

First off, try putting the vehicle into the programming mode for new fobs and verify that it has remote capability. If it doesn't, it won't matter what fob you buy since none of them would work.

 

You might need to talk to a dealership, or some locksmiths are willing to give you that type of information.

That would be the way to find the right fob without having to just buy them and hope for the best.

 

Pretty sure I covered this years ago. Look at the FCC ID number. For up to 1997, the correct FCC ID# is GQ43VT4T. 98+ is GQ43VT11T. A visit to the Ford dealer parts department yielded some strange quirkiness, as the electronics in the vehicle are the same between 97 and 98, but different transmitters. 98+ transmitters won't work on 97 (I tried it...). So I hit the junkyard, sifted through their bin of Ford transmitters and found a couple of 4-button GQ43VT4T ones (97 Crown vic ones) for $4 each.

Still got the GQ43VT11T's somewhere here. If I find them, you can have them for free.
