Lost 6 gallons of Diesel !?!?!?

Hey y’all,

30k on my 2017 F250 6.7 and proudly without a single warranty claim until today. Started the truck to let her idle and while I was loading up some tools I smelled fuel. Got under her and diesel was pouring like a fountain.

Luckily diesel ain’t combustible and my dealer is only a few miles away so I pointed it straight there. Probably lost 6 gallons in the process. I know... maybe should have had it towed but I made a judgment call.

So my first thought is squirrels. I can’t fit in my garage. Also my brother had a new 4Runner that squirrels made a bed in his engine bay and ate anout 3g’s worth of a wiring harness and labor.

Anyway, I’m waiting to see if this is on Ford, me or possible insurance claim and did a quick recall search via Ford and nothing came up

Can’t find any visible tears or holes

... then a buddy sent me this interesting link.

https://www.cars.com/recalls/ford-f_250-2017/

This raises many questions. Any input or experience on the matter would be appreciated. Cheers 🍻

My truck did something very similar. I have an early year 2017 that needed the fuel sending unit replaced because of service bullitin for the gauge not reading correctly. I could only fit 24 gallons in the tank at zero miles to empty.

About a month after I had that work done I remote started the truck and it was running but puking diesel from under the truck near the front of the tank. Leak was really bad it sprayed so much diesel so violently that the both the front and rear axles where coated in diesel along with the entire underside of the truck. I had it towed to same dealer. Tech called me the next day and told me that the o-ring that seals the fuel filter cover to the plastic box was blown out. He was really surprised and told me he had never seen that before. He said if they fail its usually immediately because the fuel pressure is so high. He could not believe it failed a month later. He replaced the o-ring and did the best he could wiping down and cleaning the underside of the truck. Truck smelled pretty badly of diesel for a few months but eventually driving through rain rinsed it well enough for the smell to go away. All is good now and have not had the problem since. Have you replaced the fuel filters lately? Tech

On the rodent issue i us bounce dryer sheets under the hoods of my trucks/sleds/wheelers.
I've never had a problem since using them, before mice would start nesting.

Appreciate the responses! Received a call from the dealer stating that they could feel a small hole in the fuel line and that it should be covered under warranty. I think they are waiting to inspect it once removed to see if it’s from a rock or a rodent.

It it would be nice if this line was covered in a stainless steel braided jacket.

Welp,

Dealer found a small hole in the fuel line and replaced under warranty. No rodent damage. No explanation of how it punctured. Went to pick it up today and the truck wouldn’t start. Heard the fuel pump run for awhile and cycled the key back and fort but nothing. Alll the techs left for the day. Strange how it must have started when they moved it out of the bay and into the pick up lot.

At least I have a new F150 as a loaner this weekend but really wanted to get my old girl back.

So this has to be related. This is my 2017 F250 with 27K on it this morning. A leak developed on top of the secondary fuel filter canister!

That is the original fuel filter, i have not changed them yet. My plan was to just replace them since i was at 27K and it is a normal maintenance item(30K interval). The vent line quick disconnect snapped at the nipple that connects the 3/16” vent line during removal. I am taking it back to the dealer tomorrow. No way those parts should be that brittle.
