Erupting Oil Filter

Decided to make a new thread, problem specific.

My motor wants to run but as soon as I build up and oil pressure the oil blasts through the gasket and pours down the sides of the reservoir. I've carefully reset the gasket 6 times now, torqued that lid down, crank the motor and boom we're pouring oil everywhere. Am I using the correct parts?? Missing a part? Gasket is garbage? Replace with something else??

Guidance please!

Alex

Check the lid. I'd bet there is an old gasket already in it. The gasket fits into a groove in the lid, after a while they have to be pried out.

What Ross said.

There is a recess in the cap that captures the gasket. Bet you have them doubled up. Many people did not change the gasket every time the filter was changed, and they became very hard. Easy to mistake for steel.

Every filter I get usually has two gaskets, one that fits perfect in the groove on the lid and one that seems too large. When you take the lid off, the gasket should be so tight that it stays in the lid. Hard to tell but that gasket looks wrong and is probably bunching up causing a gap

Agree with all of the above + install the gasket in the lid first not on the reservoir

Unfortunately there was no old gasket, just steel. Will post pics shortly.

I would get a new filter with a new gasket, install the gasket in the lid before you install it to make sure it’s the right one and get the lid bolt tight. If it still erupts sounds like you have a sludge clog or an improper gasket on the return flow back into the block. My bet would be the wrong lid gasket though.

Do as Ford348 says, seat the gasket in the lid fully first. You could tighten the bolt til the cows come home and it won't push the gasket into its groove.

The return flow into the block is the triangular gasket between the reservoir and the block? Think that one is solid, there was no blockage of any holes.

Is it possible to just buy the gasket or do I need a new filter with it?

This one? Oreillys Filter

If you take the gasket you have, and install it in the lid like others have said, tucking it into the groove, you will know if the gasket you have is correct or not. It looks too big to me though but hard to tell by a picture.

90% sure it came from Mac's with the filter.

just FYI if you have to buy another filter, your local parts store probably has one on the shelf or can get it and have later in the day.
