So just out of the blue, my newish 6.4 starter won't consistently engage the flexplate ring gear, it just spins. Luckily It starts on the second or third try. Anyone have feedback on the 6.7 starter. Also does anyone forgo installing the hidden bolt or is that a no-no. Cheers

I would always install the three bolts.

Where did you get the starter from?

I had my starter replaced around a year ago. It went out again around a month ago, so was towed to a repair shop. They replaced the starter with a rebuilt one. That one lasted around two weeks. They installed another rebuilt one. That one lasted less than a week. They then installed a new starter. I can tell the difference in engine spinning speed between the rebulit and the new starter. They said they will no longer install a rebuilt starter on a 6.0. They do quite a bit of work on 6.0 powerstroke engines. I also just spent the extra money for a new starter instead of a rebuilt for our motorhome's Cummins diesel.

So while I'm waiting for my new starter to show up, should I just keep a hammer handy to tap on the solenoid so I can drive my Excursion or just forgetaboutit?

Checkout LawDog starters. Everyone in the Facebook groups love them. I personally am running a used 6.4 starter. Once it dies, I will try out a LawDog. https://lawdogdiesel.com/products/si...torque-starter

Considering the range of total crap to Manufacturer rebuild being sold at RockAuto, it’s hard to say anything without knowing the brand.

My Ford dealer reman made it through about 60k without issue and still running, my used 6.4 OE Visteon from Diesel Redemption worked fine the short time it was in the truck.

I’m not sure how those Mahle purchasing the Letrika company, purchasing the Iskra company in Slovenia starters are. I’d probably ask Euroman about the rep in Europe. I’ve never heard of Iskra.

I made a feeble attempt at finding a new solenoid before going with the new unit in the link above.
Rockauto doesn't list them and that's about as far as I went. I'm not against changing it and having a new spare starter. I will head over to the NAPA today.

NAPA very likely won't have it they have gone to a lot of the same crap as everyone else.
You have to find an independent rebuilder for the best luck.

I think if I was going to replace my starter, I would just get one from Autozone. The Motorcraft starter has a 12 month warranty and would probably last longer........But when it fails after that, you buy another one.........

Even if the Autozone "Duralast" starter failed after 1 year every year.........., They would replace it every year until the truck went to the junk yard. (and then replace it on the "new " truck every thereafter!!)
