RPM reading during crank? Won’t start issue- need guidance
Drove to work earlier this week and truck wouldn’t start to go home. I checked all the usual stuff:
-WTS illuminated when key on; goes out at right time
-no Servive Engine Soon light (comes on for a few seconds when key on but extinguishes soon)
-batteries are good 12.6V and cranks strong
-unplugged ICP and cranked but no joy
-HPOP full of oil/ engine oil level good
-IPR has Tinnerman nut on and tight
-pulled PCM and ensure Hydra chip was secure (happened to me once before) checked pins
-unplugged and re-plugged major wire harness on driver side valve cover (no corrosion or burnt pins)
-fuel tank at 3/4
-swapped CPS with old one thought good but no change
So here is where I’m concerned as I’m watching the RPMs while I crank and the needle is barely moving off the pin. Maybe shows 100 rpm??? I don’t remember where the rpm usually goes when I start since my truck always starts within a sec or two of cranking after I replaced the sticks. Is only a 100 rpms indicative of a bad CPS? I thought any RPM reading during crank meant a good CPS?
i have another OBDlink MX on order as I can’t find my original (think punks rifled my truck and took it last year) . As soon as I get Torque Pro readings for IPR and ICP, I hope to narrow this down a bit but am concerned about the RPMs being low now. I’m leaning toward the IPR being dirty/faulty but will pull pressures to validate before randomly plucking/chucking parts.

Yeah, I’m thinking IPR too but that’s a dirty mess to change in a work parking garage. I cleaned the IPR in my ‘95 PSD many years ago and remember the pan filling up with oil. I think just doing a quick swap wouldn’t allow to much oil to drain but I always underestimate how dirty repairs are...

I forgot to mention fuel bowl is full and I can hear/feel the fuel pump come on when key on. I didn’t test to see how much fuel is being pumped by removing the fuel filter as I’m stuck in the office parking garage. Bad enough truck is stuck... don’t need to leave puddles of flammable fluids.. There’s no smoke during crank so I don’t think injectors are firing from no IPR pressure. Probably.
i didn’t bother with the 30 amp fuse since WTS is on...but I’ll check when I head in.

No smoke and it turns over as good as usual. Not saying the batts and starter are the strongest but I don’t think they’re the cause.
i did get my new ODBlink MX today and downloaded the PIDS for IPR and IPC but didn’t get any readings on them. Getting RPMs, vacuum, etc on the standard PIDS so not sure if I’m really not getting readings or I didn’t load them correctly. Still playing with it.

My 2001 does not show RPMs while cranking either. I asked about this in another thread and the general consensus was ... some do and some don't. Go figure!?!
