Transmission 1st start
On my, 2000 SD V10 the 1st start in the morning, the transmission won’t engage in drive.
I have to pull the shifter down to L, then take off, then I shift it to D, and it’s fine.
there is no rough shifting or any other issues, and it’s fine for the rest of the day.
its only after it’s sat overnight...
I changed fluid and filter a few months ago. It seemed to help for a little while.

Check the fluid level when cold BEFORE starting the engine. If it is very overfilled it is because the torque converter is draining into the pan. There is a valve in the pump body that should prevent this. If it gets stuck or leaks the converter can drain. When it's really low on fluid it can't transmit torque and you don't go anywhere. Maybe moving the shift lever to 1 is just enough extra time for the converter to refill.
