dana 44 ttb vs dana 44 solid axle gears

so i have a dana 44 ttb in my 96 f150 right now and i'm getting ready to do a straight axle dana 44 swap. the straight axle has 3.50 gears and my 96 ford has 3.73 gears in the 8.8 rear and 3.73 gears in the front dana 44 ttb also. (truck is an off-road edition) if possible i would like to take the ring and pinion. (carrier assembly if needed) and put it in them/it in my dana 44 straight axle to prevent the added cost of buying new gears.

dana 44 solid axle is from a 78 bronco if it makes a difference

has anyone done this? is there any way i can get it to work? or am i just going to have to buy new gears?

thanks in advance, cole

New gear sets are cheap, why mess with trying to set up used ones?

if i buy new gears i'm going with 4.56. then i'll have to buy 4.56 for the rear. so rather than buying $400-$500 worth of gears i'd rather just swap them. seems how i only have 33s it would ruin my gas milage even more. and i don't really have money for bigger tires as i am 16 using money i've made from a few years of 4H and the swap is already gonna cost me more than i was hoping. the snowball effect. you know how it goes

The gears, carrier, etc will swap without an issue.
Not that you need to change the carrier. 3.50 and 3.73 use the same carrier.

Maybe. Do a gear pattern check and if regearing both just swap carriers.
Shims go with gears and may need a set of new shims depending on what pattern you end up with.

Who put the 3.73s in the truck? Ford did not offer that ratio in the OBS trucks. 3.55 or 4.10 (as well as numerically lower) as far as I know. If the truck is not been touched then post the axle code from the b-pillar sticker.

They TTB is likely 3.55. I would still regear though. 3.50 and 3.55 is enough of a difference that anywhere other than mud or sand you could have problems.

That doesn't even make sense, you have to buy 4.56 if you change and then need rears too? Sounds like 16 year old logic. You can get a new gearset from ebay for a little over $100. Do you know how to set up a gearset? or some adult that knows. Setting up used ones can be tricky to get right.

came with 3.73s because it was an off road package. MAF 351. dual front shocks. 3.73 gears. "trac-lock" rear end. etc etc

if i buy new gears for the front im buying 4.56. if i buy 4.56 for the front obviously i'm going to buy the same gear ratio for the rear. not sure how that doesn't make sense. from my prior knowledge and opinions from experienced others. you get what you pay for. and i'd rather buy from a trusted website than some guy on ebay. as far as the gears being set up: my dad, who helped me build my truck, has built many trucks over his years of existence and has been pulling trucks for 20 years, will be the one teaching me how to install them as i've only ever seen it done once and he has done it countless times. also that wasn't the question so you can go ahead and **** off. thanks.

Get a picture of the Axle code on the driver side b-pillar. To the best of my knowledge Ford never offered 3.73 on OBS trucks. Axle code chart below

Agreed, if it is 3.73 it is a one of a kind
