V10 - rough idle and dies at startup
So had an issue about a week and half ago, was hoping it was an isolated incident. Apparently not as it did it again about four times in a row tonight.
2001 Excursion V10, 78K miles
I turn the key to start it and the idle is horrible right away, then dies within 10 seconds. If you press the gas pedal it will die quicker. You can smell gas like it is running super rich when this happens. There are no codes (scanguage installed permanently). No other symptoms and this is my DD, owned for three years and this is new.
After four times of the above on the fifth turn of the key it stumbled very slightly then RPM's went up like normal and settled where they should be when in Park.
Any others with similar issue that was able to solve it?
I have not replaced or cleaned the IAC Valve since I have owned it, obviously need to. I plan to clean MAF and should check fuel pressure as well.
Thanks for any advice!

I kinda just went through a similar thing on a 2010 5.4... got to the point it wouldn't start at all, fuel dripping from the exhaust. Forscan showed a pending code for the right hand upstream o2 sensor. Ended up having towed to the shop, they replaced the sensor and presumably reset the pcm and all is well again, not sure if they did anything else. (And for the record, I was capable of replacing the senor, I just didn't feel it would cause the no-start).
First thing though, clean that iac....

Honestly embarrassed to admit it but I have not changed the IAC yet. The issue has not shown up again though. I do daily drive the Excursion and have been on a couple long trips with no issues. Replacing the IAC valve, along with some other maintenance items are on the to do list however.

Quick update. Yesterday I had an issue with the Excursion not starting after dropping kids off for school. Started fine first thing in the morning but then just crank and no start the second time I tried to start it. I replaced the IAC valve and it was certainly dirty and needed replacement but I don't think that is my issue. I believe I am now dealing with a fuel delivery issue or battery problem. I will be starting a new thread more than likely...

Different vehicle but my Dodge van died going down the road. Pulled over, started right back up. Drove it another week. Was leaving for work on Monday morn...wouldn't start. Drove the Ex. Came home that evening...started right up. Drove it the rest of the week...no issues until time to leave work that Friday. Wouldn't start. Anyway, it ended up being the fuel pump.

Problem surfaced again this morning. Exact same circumstances. Started fine first thing in the morning, had a short drive, then wouldn't start for a few turns of the key. It did start this time and I was able to get to work. This time I wasn't able to get a fuel pressure gauge on it since it started within a couple key turns. Idle seems a little off but I could be imagining it.
Unless there are other ideas I think i see a new fuel pump in the very near future...

Check your pressure anyways. I am assuming these should be about 40lbs, if it is showing 20, then you know. I am assuming you have already replaced the filter? In my experience, the fuel pumps will either not hold pressure very long after being shut off causing an extended cranking to start. Or, they show low pressure. I have been able to rock a car to get the fuel pump going again, that usually works good when you have a car towed home and can start it to back it off the truck.
