Regen question: length of time?

I took a 1000 mile round trip and after a stop for fuel midway back on the return trip, I think the truck went into regen mode.

I say "I think" because there was no indication other than a pretty dramatic loss in fuel economy for about 15-20 minutes (18+ down to 12-13). All highway miles, outside temp about 78.

Is normal? I don't recall my 2011 doing this.

I'm curious about this as well but suspect it will vary greatly drive to drive, load to load, ect...
I just ordered the bluetooth OBDII adapter and will see if forscan has something that shows you are in active regen. Not a fan of turning off an engine in regen (i have two VW scandal TDI's also). Not wanting to initiate it, I'll let it do it's own thing, just curious when it is in regen. The mileage indicator is ok for this but if you are on a hill, or wind, or loaded, hard to tell if it's regen or just the load.

In the neighborhood of 20-25 minutes or 20-25 miles, depends on how fast your driving and how you are driving.

Right on target, then.

Sure did hate to see that 12.9 MPG...

Well Im going to be honest here, I never got the mpg some claim to on any diesel I owned. My truck as a daily driver will average 15.5mpg, if there is a regen involved on a particular tank it will drop to 13.5-14mpg.

A Bluetooth OBDII dongle (I use the ScanTool ODBLink MX 426101) and a the FORScan iOS or Android app will let you know (among other things) exactly when the truck is in regeneration mode (there's a PID for that).

At a constant 55 to 60 mph on flat highways and reasonably decent weather, I can average 19.x-ish. 70 to 75 mph, it drops to about 16 to 17 mpg. When regen kicks in, I see it fall down to ~14 or so.

Yep, this was a straight highway run, all the way.

73-75 mph, i can get up to 19+.

Mixed, regular driving I'm probably close to where you're at.

I find it a bit better (maybe 5%) than the previous truck, but pretty close, al in all.

Mine is an F-250, which probably explains the difference.

Just an FYI, I've had 2 or 3 regens that lasted all of 5 minutes and completely cleaned the dpf to zero from full, the soot level fell so fast it looked like a stop watch counting down. Never understood these but others have noticed them too, they are not common.

My 2011 goes into regen just about every 450 miles, towing 18000 pounds or normal driving. It is always for about 15/18 minutes and 15/18 miles

My regens are about 15 miles, and it averages about 10 MPG during that time - 0.5 gallon hit every 450-500 miles. (1.5 gallons burned instead of 1 gallon.) That's less than a 2% hit.

I stopped over my brothers and right when I was about to turn off my truck .. I smelled it.. regen time.. hit the highway and drove at 70mph for around 15min and it was done. Dropped from 16mph down to 14.9 in record time lol time I got back to my brothers it was at 15.3mpg .. first time I have caught it before I turn the truck off. I ask my ford dealer if they can add the filter % on my dash and they still can't get ids software yet .

Yep, normal.

500 mile max between regens (computer trigger even if not full)

Time and distance to full regen varies by operating temperature, load, RPM, etc. Mine usually vary between 7 and 15 minutes, but normally last about 8-10 on the highway.
