6.7 Oil filter capacity

I hope i am not bringing up an old thread. I looked and did not see anything. Anyway, changed my oil today and did not pay any attention to how much oil i put in the filter. I fill my filters before installing. I installed the filter and added 12 more quarts. For what ever reason, i assumed the filter held a quart but did not pay attention when filling it. The dipstick reads good but am just curious if anyone has measured it.

It probably holds about a quart. I haven’t filled mine at oil change time. Maybe I should.

I think my filter was close to a quart, however if the total amount you put in was 13 qts I would think youre ok

I'm with the above two posts. Around a quart. My oil comes in gallon jugs and I pour it out of the jug into the oil filter. So I can't give you an exact amount.

What's the purpose in prefilling filter. I never have done that. Is there a down side to not filling it. I just fill engine fire it up up for 20 seconds and turn back off to make just level is good.

We’ve always pre-filled our filters when position and gravity allows. The 17-18’s are perfect candidates because the filter hangs just in the right spot. My father in law’s 11 Cummins has the filter buried in the engine bay - impossible to pre-fill. No scientific data here but, I would think that more full you could keep the closed system, the better off you’d be. A full filter at startup would push lubrication without any gaps, albeit very small gaps.

The one bad side to prefilling the filter is that the oil is not filtered before it gets pumped to the engine. The small holes around the outside are the filter inlets, the large, threaded center hole is the outlet to the engine. I haven’t changed mine yet, so I’m not sure if the filters on these use an anti-drain back check valve. If so, you have to pour the oil into the large center hole, thus, the oil will not be filtered before it goes to your main/rod bearings, etc. Imagine what a piece of the foil seal from the top of the oil jug could do.

3/4 quart, 4/5 quart, 1 quart. It doesn't really matter. In the end, you put as much oil into the vehicle as it needs to get to the safe zone on the dipstick.

Oil from the jug is cleaner than any oil that's gone through your engine.

Imagine what a piece of the foil seal from the top of the oil jug could do.
You'd have to be a really incompetent moron to do that.

Agreed on both responses.

If I prefill the filter with oil then I won't need to add as much - if any - after the engine is started for the first time after an oil change.

I've never typically pre-filled the oil filter during the change on any of my vehicles, including motorcycles. That said, its usually, as mentioned above, been due to filter position (horizontal, canister style vertical, etc...). When I do the first change on my SD, I'll be pre-filling the filter given its easy and vertical location. 3/4 quart should be darn close.

Well, I've done some stuff in my life that would qualify me for that distinction!

I guess not all of us can be as perfect as certain others around here.
