Mixing Wheel Bearing Grease

Finishing the front end conversion on my truck to older style cone-roller bearings.

I ended up finishing a tub of grease and having to pick some up from a different auto parts store.

The first tub I used, was Napa brand wheel bearing grease for vehicles with disk brakes. Its lithium based.

The next tub I picked up is the same, but red in color, and is also lithium based.

I shouldn't have anything to worry about, mixing two different colored lithium based greases, should I?

Seems a bit silly to ask, but I don't want to find myself on the side of the Alaskan highway, knowing I could have avoided a problem with a 5 minute post on FTE.

as long as they are the same chemically you should be fine. The should be the same consistency with the same dropping point and they should mix just fine.

I've always been told not to mix different greases. While they are both lithium based and probably would be fine, I have found the red doesn't hold up near like the off-road/Marine grease does.

I'm not at the house right now to look at my books and give specifics, but if I remember when I get home I'll take a gander at em for ya.

Not My first choice to mix,but I never have seen a wheel bearing failure with mixed grease & i have seen a lot of combinations.

Mixing lithium and calcium-based grease will cause you all sorts of major problems but since the base is the same in this case you will be ok.

I accidentally bought a case of polyurea grease once and after using it (and mixing with some calcium sulfonate grease), it turned to the consistency of.....granite. That was a fun bucket pin bushing relacement a few weeks later.

Like the other have said, the base is basically what determines if greases are compatible. At least that's what my lube class was told. Should be good to go.

Thank you for the answers.

After verifying that both greases were of the same base, I went ahead and mixed them.

Thanks everyone!
